And the airlines typically charter these just like they do in the regular season for many college and pro sports

And given that the “backup” airplane is coming from Cincinnati (a Delta hub), I’d be willing to be that it’s Delta (the media darling) that’s responsible. No proof, just a hunch

Why were they waiting till Wednesday to fly in? Seems like that is the main problem here. If they had scheduled their flight for Tuesday it would have been no big deal to have a delay.
