Players are telling coaches straight up they will probably only be around one season!

A friend of mine's husband is a basketball assistant at a group of five school and she stated last signing period a couple of incoming players informed the coaches that their plan was to sign with their school, but they were hoping to play well and sign a big NIL deal with a larger school. She stated one of those players is having a great season and her husband is frustrated because they already know they're going to lose him and there's nothing they can do about it!
Don't you just love the transfer portal and NIL!

This is nothing new. Has been going on long before NIL.

That’s been the JUCO model for 70 years.

That's not true. Not long ago players had to sit out when they transferred, but now you get to transfer, play immediately and get a lot money at the same time!

Maybe they should make coaches sit out a year when they jump to bigger schools.

G5 coaches have generally gone after the 4-5 year kids who aren’t good enough to transfer or leave early for the draft. They take the less talented and under valued kids who stay and get developed. If a kid tells you before hand he’ll leave after a year, it’s kind of on the coach for signing him if that’s going to be an issue for him. I sort of commend the kid for being honest with the coach upfront

I agree with your sentiment but this is a bad example. Every kid that goes G5 wanted P5, and every single player in G5 that shows out and proves all the recruiters wrong eventually transfers up anyway, before NIL and portal. And in basketball, if they are really good, they are one and done anyway.

Maybe what's "fair" isn't marketable as a form of entertainment. These players are going to kill the goose.

Players can declare for the NBA after one season. What's the difference?

In reality they should start out small and advance. Most kids these days think they’re gods gift to earth. The product would be better weeding out all the thugs and slackers. Or allow the nfl to take the risk.

That’s what they’re told to do if they don’t get on a team they want initially…by their private coaches.
Recruiting is a real tough thing on high school kids. We’ve gone through it for football and its been BRUTAL. Transfers are taking those spots and they’re desperate since they just wont get to play if they don’t find a team.
You’re a little shite if you act like the opportunity someone is offering you isn't good enough…I’d have trouble being nice to them.

Damn shame those kids aren't going to be forced to stay at the school with limited resources and limited opportunities for 3 years.
Why I can remember back in my day when I was a young electrician's assistant I had to stay on for years before I could try to get promoted

This is the issue. Lost in all the "but it's not faaaaair" whining is the fact that 1. The fans are paying money and paying attention because there is a very specific product that they want, and 2. No one was being forced to participate under the old model. If you decide that what the fans want is not as important as what the players want, eventually the system collapses and ruins it for everyone.

a coaching job is a profession, when you go to college, you are a student athlete. after the student leaves college and goes play pro sports, then he too can try to better his paying job. NIL and the transfer portal will ruin college sports.

I totally agree. I think if they had a one-year penalty for coaches and players that leave, it would put a stop to all of this jumping from team to team.
Of course, we all know that would never happen.
