The Mississippi is misnamed and should be called the Missouri River.

Should be Illinois River. They have the most shoreline of the Mississippi.

The Pascagoula River (AKA The Singing River). Grew up on it and live on it now. Only heard the singing a few times in my younger days and purple ringed mushrooms may have been involved…

quote:

According to local Euro-American legend, the peace-loving Pascagoula tribe walked single file into the Singing River because the local Biloxi tribe were planning to attack.[12] Anola, a Biloxi "princess", eloped with the Pascagoula chief Altama, although she was engaged to a Biloxi chieftain. Anola's angry would-be husband led his soldiers into battle with the Pascagoula. Outnumbered and fearing enslavement by the Biloxi, the tribe joined hands and walked into the river singing a death song. This section of the Pascagoula River became known as the "Singing River" because of this death song, which reportedly can still be heard at night.

Wiki

quote:

Running for 130 kms through the Gulf Coastal plain in southeastern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama, Pascagoula is the largest undammed, free-flowing river (by volume) in the continental United States.

No, it should be called the Ohio if standard naming conventions were followed. The flow in the Ohio is greater than in the Mississippi at its confluence.

Nah, old maps call it the Missouri River all the way to New Orleans.

One cool thing about the Tombigbee River is that it's part of the Great Loop. You can navigate through part of it in a small craft from Mobile Bay all the way up to Chicago and over to the Eastern seaboard and through Caloosahatchee River in Florida to the Gulf, back to Mobile Bay.

Dude...

De Soto discovered the river in Natchez

Thus it is rightfully called the Mississippi River

The Mississippi along the Alton/Grafton/St. Charles corridor is the only place for water sports in the St. Louis metro. I heard another marina was going to be put in place north of the 2nd Chain Of Rocks Bridge, but that could and will be dicey.

An old joke that still applies..

Why does the St. John’s river flow north through Jacksonville? Because UGA sucks…..

A little tidbit of trivia about it

quote:

The St. Johns — one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north — is one of the laziest rivers in the world. From its source in the marshes south of Melbourne to its mouth in Mayport, the river drops a total of less than 30 feet — or about one inch per mile.

I'd never heard of that. You'd need a nice boat and some free time. One of the websites I looked at said it's been done in as short as 6 weeks and as long as 12 years, but it is typically 10-12 months.

Now, I have a new retirement bucket list item.

I am moving to El Paso this summer, but I imagine all the folks constantly trudging across the Rio Grande have messed up the best fishing spots
