Do you think AD’s will be more inclined to hang onto a marginal coach knowing how a roster can be decimated? It’s easy for us to say, “just rip off the band-aid”, but the AD’s job is on the line. He might get by for two more years with a 7-5 coach, but he’s gone with a 3-9 as a result of transfers.

It's obviously plausible, but doubtful depending on the program. I believe there will be player contracts coming down the pike to avoid mass exodus over a coaching change.

If you're planning on dumping your coach, you need to let the NILs know they better open up the vault for the offseason.

If you're on the margins, you probably don't have that many major losses on the roster. A&M could be an example of the exception (possibly) because they had a lot of talented players on the roster. And while the portal taketh, it also giveth.

With the transfer portal I don’t know you will probably still lose players that are good wanting to go to better teams or going for more money. You may just not lose as many in the portal by keeping the coach.

That's situational. Sometimes the roster AND coaching staff need to be blown up.

At a minimum I would not fire a coach outside of the allotted portal windows.

We could have a Black Monday for firing coaches on the first Monday of portal season, followed by Transfer Tuesday.

This seems plausible.

If you’re going 5-7 with your current roster why is that a problem

I’m referring to marginal coaches 7-6, 6-6, 8-5 (at a school with history) types. Not cut and dry scenarios.

Making a change with a marginal coach is not the issue. Having a solid coach voluntarily leave your program is what kills you.

Pretty big difference in having a successful coach with a very good roster retire and an underachieving coach which probably a not great roster being fired.

Look at State, for example. Sure they lost some kids to the portal, but that doesn't outweigh getting the coach in that you want (who then also brings in transfers). Even A&M, who had an abnormally talented roster for a coaching change. I'm guessing they are totally fine with the exchange of new coach, starting over with transfer bandaids and losing the old roster.

CFB will make a transition to portal recruiting and tampering. Why bother recruiting high school players that can leave weeks after signing their LOI? Seriously, I'd build at least half of my team in the portal at this point.

High School players are basically like rookies with no contracts to worry about. If a high school player turns out to be good, chances are he's in the portal in the off-season fielding offers anyway.
