when LSU played the bowl game, they were down to 39 scholarship players. they had a receiver who had to play QB. coach O left the team in shambles.

That article is just wrong.

LSU never had 85 scholarship players in 2022, and we signed 32.

They didn't have 85. They were still suffering from the self imposed scholarship reduction of 8 scholarships.

Yes, LSU played a bowl game with 39 scholarship players that were willing to play or physically able to play. But Brian Kelly did not inherit a team with only 39 scholarship players.

He had to recruit draft eligible players to stay with the program and not bolt….something Deboring is apparently unable to do.

So he did what every coach has to do. Sit down with the draft eligible player and look at their projected draft spot and tell them they would be better coming back.

The number for the bowl was actually 38 as Bech was a game time scratch.

Assuming all returned the following year, you take the 38 that were available, add your 30 transfers/recruits, plus Nuss, Boutte, Smith, Bech, and Emery who didn't play, you're at 73.

Per the 247 Team Talent Composite, 2022 LSU started the year with 72 scholarship players.

I'm assuming the extra player is Pig Cage, who transferred in the spring of 2022.

The self imposed scholarships. And a couple transferred out after spring. But 39 is not true according to the LSU GEAUX247 site. Sporting News had the same numbers.

Yeah all coaches step into a program and convince ~15 draft eligible players who OPTED OUT of the bowl game after their previous HC was fired.

They all do that.

I mean it may have been more like 42 or so, that's not a huge difference really.

The only players that I remember opting out of the bowl and returning in 2022 were Boutte and Nuss.

Bech was supposedly an injury, Smith was injured, Emery was ineligible.

It was 52. I get it, LSU fans heard during the bowl game that they only had 39 scholarship players and took that to mean only 39 left. But to keep parroting that number after an LSU writer wrote the actual number is a bit hard to understand.

I know you may not understand this, but the math doesn't allow for it to be 52.

LSU did have several spring transfers but there weren't that many, also not sure why we'd even count a transfer as an "inherited player" as they never played for Kelly.

Because it's what he started with when he took over. Transferred out because Kelly brought in transfers. Kelly did a great coaching job that year. Why embellish what he did that year with false claims?
