You are assuming Saban knew he was retiring before the season began.

I believe what Saban said about his retirement, a lot of it, is media-friendly BS. I don't for one second believe Saban decided to retire after a phone call with his wife 5 minutes before a team meeting the same day after he'd been interviewing potential future staff members.
