The powers-that-be want the inmates running the asylum. Colleges are still making tons of money while rich boosters are filling the kids pockets full of money, all in the name of their school 'winning'. The whole process is completely off the rails. Colleges are running a minor league football organization. I'd be a NFL coach over college these days. At least they have more control and players can't just opt-out of a game.

The fans don't have the balls to tell the players and coaches to all go frick themselves. Winning is too important.

Coaches shouldn't have nine figure contracts to teach an extracurricular activity. Students shouldn't be given a dime to play an extracurricular activity.

Give the coaches reasonable contracts and tell any student asking for money to take a hike. If everyone would do that you would have a "purer" sport.

The kids haven't ruined the sport. The fans have.

In a lot of ways, it is more interesting now, but it is going to kill a lot of the mid level schools and break their fans' will. They are just going to be the farm system for 15-20 teams. For a few years, they will be fooled that getting an underperforming 5 star transfer is creating parity. But reality will set in

I agree. I am really happy I got to see the 2 titles before this crap got out of control. I am actually not torn up over the loss this year, although I believe we probably were one of the best 4 teams.

I am quickly losing interest in a sport that was too much a part of my life. First I dropped the NFL and got my Sundays back, now it looks like I am getting my whole weekends back.

I actually missed the FSU beatdown. I thought it was on New Years day. lol Imagine my mild surprise when I was checking the boards on Sunday.

I think things will improve if they remove the veil of amateurism and actually have the players be compensated through binding contracts

That's what was said about the forward pass. Rules and changes that have impacted the game. This is no different. No way to turn back from this now.

I think you are on to something, but this should have had guidelines before this was allowed. Hopefully you are right.

Yep.

Everyone walking around decked out in their team’s gear, paying money to watch the games on television that still runs ads, giving money to NIL collectives to pay illiterates to play a GAME, this is YOUR fault.

That’s Alabama speak for “Things were better when only a few elite teams were paying off significant portions of their rosters.”

I agree. The NCAA’s insistence on amateurism has done a lot of harm in my opinion

Comments like this invoke a time when college football wasn't corrupt. This is nonsense. College football has always had paid players (see Jim Thorpe), questionable transfers (see the recruitments of YA Tittle and Eric Dickerson), and big money boosters running the show behind the scenes. In the past, it was so bad that the Marx Brothers made a movie about it in 1932.

It's just more open now, and a lot of people are uncomfortable now that they can see how the sausage is made.

quote:

“I used to go along with the idea that football players on scholarship were student athletes, which is what the NCAA calls them, meaning student first and athlete second. We were kidding ourselves, trying to make it more palatable to the academicians . . . At the level we play, the boy is really an athlete first and a student second.”
-- Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, 1974
