Why do coaches preach play to the whistle blows....(fumbled punt)

Because of this right here. LINK
I asked in an earlier post a few days ago what happened to our punt coverage on that last punt. Maybe if he hadn't let up he would have been in position to recover the muffed catch or at the very least tackled him before he secured the football.

I thought the same exact thing.
Looked like a couple players let up instead of sprinting to the punt returner. Very well could have been their moment where “A Legend Was Made”. But they chose to let up. You never know when it’s your moment.

I don't see how any of the coverage guys could have recovered that ball. It barely got away from the returner who got on it quick.

Man how the hell does that ball stop like that

I'm guessing they were told to play safe/contain to avoid a big return. Didn't want to overrun the returner and give them better field position.
But it's a another "what if" moment in the game. What if that ball ricochets just a little harder off his arm and goes in to the endzone? We either recover it or tackle him for a safety. Would have made for an even crazier ending...

Or they over-pursue, the guy returns it to the 50, and we celebrate the the gunner entering the transfer portal

I think they probably let up because they didn't want to over-run the ball carrier and wanted to make damn sure he didn't get behind them, which would have been bad.

The returner signaled for fair catch, didn’t really seem like the let up. I don’t understand how he held on to the ball after getting blasted by Law lol

I know. He's only held the ball for a half second when Law unloads on him. The guy messed up by muffing it in the first place obviously but that recovery was an incredible play.

In my day, that would have been looked at far more carefully. It was a fumble.. The moment he secured and tried to advance would have 'negated' the forward progress explained. I caused a safety in college, on an identical play, where I knocked the punt returner back into the endzone [and on the deck].
Michigan's player may have been down before the goal line [knee IIRC] but even their spot looked suspect to me.

The Michigan guy picked the ball up literally like a half second or less before he was hit.
That's only a few yards of running.

Exactly, if Law didn't hesitate he would have hit him a second sooner and might have created a fumble.
