Did I miss the discussion on the punt where Burnip went down...

First, I don't like penalties and don't believe you should rely on them to win the game. Second, I just don't remember seeing anything about it. I missed it live, having walked away from the TV but heard it on the radio.

(Setup. 3rd Down... JM had just scrambled, making up good yards and lost footing while trying to slide -- coming up 2-3 yards short of the first down)

This screenshot was from ESPN2 [where one of the commentators gets 'oh shite' bleeped] when Burnip is hit. Michigan player was clearly not intending to hit him, in fact looking the other way but you'll recall it was a pretty hard hit, knee-to-knee.

Clear as day penalty for running into kicker. Should have been an Alabama first down. Official saw it and still got it wrong. It happens. Plenty of time and subsequent Bama frick ups happened after this that I kind of forgot about it.

From the rule book:

quote:

Roughing or Running Into Kicker or Holder

ARTICLE 16. a. When it is obvious that a scrimmage kick will be made, no opponent shall run into or rough the kicker or the holder of a place kick (A.R.
9-1-16-I, III and VI).

1. Roughing is a live-ball personal foul that endangers the kicker or holder.

2. Running into the kicker or holder is a live-ball foul that occurs when the kicker or holder is displaced from their kicking or holding position but is not roughed (A.R. 9-1-16-II).

3. Incidental contact with a kicker or holder is not a foul.

4. The kicker’s protection under this rule ends (a) when the kicker has had a reasonable time to regain their balance (A.R. 9-1-16-IV); (b) when the kicker carries or possesses the ball outside the tackle box (Rule 2-34) before kicking; or (c) when the kicker carries or possesses the ball more than five yards behind the kicker’s initial position at the snap from scrimmage kick formation.

5. When a defensive player’s contact against the kicker or holder is caused by an opponent’s block (legal or illegal), there is no foul for running into or roughing.

6. A player who makes contact with the kicker or holder after touching the kick is not charged with running into or roughing the kicker.

7. When a player other than one who blocks a scrimmage kick runs into or roughs the kicker or holder, it is a foul.

8. When in question whether the foul is running into or roughing, the foul is roughing.

The only way it's not roughing or running into the kicker is if the refs thought Section 3 or 4(a) was applicable

Well its definitely not 4a.

I think that 3 is probably what they determined, which still wasn't the right call, but I think that they probably didn't think that it was egregious as it was from whatever angle they had, and they perhaps thought that Burnip was doing a little bit of acting. Oh well, shite happens.

I understand the thinking, and how kickers are taught. When it was replayed, it looked bad.

Like you stated it happens.

Just stuns me the subjective nature of it... especially since when I've seen far milder incidental contact called and [at least I] was concerned about Burnip who was laying on the field.

Burnip is the reason for winning the position game and if he was injured, it may have been devastating to the team.

We did have a discussion about this. It's not the reason Alabama lost, but it was an egregious miss and it just sucks that Bama has been screwed by the officials so many times these past two seasons. Regarding the rules on roughing/running into the kicker, I've noticed in recent years that it goes uncalled way more than it used to, at the same time that roughing the passer gets called way more than it used to. I assume the NCAA just doesn't care about protecting a lesser known player like the punter.

Would it have mattered if they had called the penalty?

Milroe would've just gotten sacked again, and BAMA would've just punted 3 plays later anyway.

Edit: most definitely a penalty, though.

He was the definition of a defenseless player - EXACTLY what the rule was created for. The player needed to be checked out by the medical staff to make sure it was not dangerous to put weight on the leg without damaging it further.

I had somebody on this forum the other day arguing with me that point shaving players and paid off refs were made up delusions of fanatic fans.

That was a flag 100% without some kind of bias influence.

It was worse than the Bryce Young targeting call at Tenneessee a few years ago where Bama had 3hundredfiddy penalties called against them for eleventybillion yards yet the refs missed the most obvious targeting to the QB head and driven into the ground call of all time. Every single person in the stadium, and watching on TV saw it clear as day

The shite is real.
