Weren't the problem the last few years?

The first thing that jumped out at me game 1 was defense playing faster, hitting harder, and taking better angles.

I mean, based on what?
Everyone is painting Alabama as some great team because of recency bias but this team has looked very flawed at times this season.
I mean, you played for a natty in 2021 with your "bad coordinators" and trounced Georgia in the SEC title.

Comparing Golding to Steele is like trying to compare a Suzuki to a Lexus.

Argue about the offense all you want but the defensive numbers vs Top 25 offenses is as black and white a change as could exist. There is no argument.

What do the birds eye numbers look like, such as opponent YPG and PPG?
I'm sure there are absolutely nuanced differences in specific approaches, but are the results really that much better?
Some of that is the result of Alabama being so good, that there wasn't much room for improvement.

A full TD a game better.

Defense was our weakness the past two years, despite talent. This year it is our strength.
Offense is harder to judge as a great QB (Young) can make anyone look good, but if you judge a coordinator by the progress his new QB makes over the course of a season, then Rees has knocked it out of the park.
Every Bama fan I know thinks we upgraded. We underperformed the previous two seasons.

Rees adjustments since Oct have been great

I'm pretty sure Rees is still meh. He just looked better once Milroe started powering up.

I don't understand why Milroe wasn't really turned loose on the ground until the LSU game.

An ankle injury is part of the reason.

I thought it was Saban's defense?
The offense isn't bad but its not nearly as strong as O'Brien's offenses were.

Fair enough, I definitely thought the defense looked more physical however the Auburn game kind of surprised me.

Hat tip to Hugh, he schemed us, both in the run game and in some big moments with pass plays (the touchdown pass out of the backfield).
Even then, Auburn scored 24 pts and had 337 yards, both below their SEC averages and roughly the same as their Georgia performance (307 yards and 20 pts).

It's his philosophy and his scheme, but coordinators run the defense day to day and on gameday and call the game. Always been that way.

Take away a TD in every game against Top 25 offenses and Alabama is undefeated in 2022.
Add a TD every game against top 25 offenses in 2023 and Alabama has 2 more losses.
So yeah I'd say it makes big fricking difference
