Then we realized around the dawn of the 21st century that we have computers, so lets use them! 5 or so odd years later tantrums are thrown, so we alter that computer formula to add a little more human say into the mix. Decade later we throw away the computers and go back to 100% human opinion.
Point being, Booger is right, it is a beauty pageant. It's always been a beauty pageant, this sport is built on being a beauty pageant. FSU's exclusion isn't a travesty. In fact, they're pretty far down the list of championship worthy teams who were denied the crown.

100%
And this year everyone is saying that next year will be better because the team left out is #13 instead of #5... until their team is ranked #13. Welcome to life. Life's not fair.

You’ve got a bunch of small fiefdoms, which makes for inconsistencies. And, when it comes down to which one gets screwed, it’s always going to come down to the path of least resistance.

How long will Alabama fans attempt to justify this?
You had a good argument to get in, so did FSU.
They lost their quarterback and you got the spot, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I would honestly argue that the committee didn't take the path of least resistance this time. Do you disagree?

I don’t think they were going to tell the most powerful commissioner & coach in the game you’re not in. Same for us, frankly. If they were going to put Bama in, they weren’t going to risk leaving out Texas. Travis’ injury made FSU the least damaging bridge to burn.

That's a fair argument. My counter-point would be that Bama was leftout last year without much consequence (under different circumstance.. not arguing they should have made the Playoffs last year).
The state of FL wants to sue. I don't think Bama would have gone that far

This is EXACTLY right. College football has forever been held hostage by the bowls. We got the powers that be to consent to a two team playoff because they did not think it would threaten the precious bowl system. Then 10 years ago we fought and got an expanded 4 team playoff. Beginning next year we will have a 12 team playoff to determine a champion on the field. Florida State deserves to play for a championship but so does Alabama, Michigan, Washington, Texas, Georgia and Ohio State. A true playoff system for college football is long overdue. Bring it on. In the meantime Florida State you have my sincere condolences. You deserved better.

Yep. You can't compare it to the NFL. Everyone plays the same number of games against similar competition in the NFL. Your division opponents twice, rotate the other divisions in the conference each year, rotate divisions from the other conference each year, then there are 3 games left and you play 2 other conference opponents from a different division than you are scheduled, and 1 from the other conference from a different division than you are scheduled, and it is all based on prior year results. Win the most games compared to your 3 other division opponents and you go to the playoffs, and if not that, have the best record among all non division winners. But there's only 32 teams and it is spelled out how to qualify.
Thankfully going forward, all conference champs of whatever P4 or P5 we're left with will get their shot, regardless of record. Sure you might end up with a 9-3 team pulling an upset against a 12-0 team in their conference championship, but at least we won't have "deserving" teams being left out with 12. If you're not top 8 you're not likely to win it all anyways, but it will give the illusion of fairness.

frick it.
Let's just play a 133 team tournament and decide a champion like that. Since everyone is butthurt on who is left out and it will continue regardless of how many teams you add until you just add everyone.
frick the regular season and conferences. Seeding is determined on how you did previous battle royal and what you bring back next season

They weren't denied the crown, they were denied the opportunity to play for the crown. That's different.
The "best team regardless of resume" thing just doesn't hold water.
Let me ask you a question and I want you to answer honestly:
If this Alabama team was the exact same and the exact same outcome occurred in the SEC title game, but a week earlier 1 miracle 31 yard last second pass fell incomplete, would Alabama be in the playoff?
Same team, beats Georgia, looks good doing so, just a single, extremely low percentage play doesn't happen. It doesn't change the abilities of Alabama's team whatsoever and everything else remains constant from the year.
The answer, I presume, is NO. That is proof that there is a bunch of weight in resume, but leaving out FSU proves there is "selective" weight in resume, which is bullshite.
Another, weaker argument for this is Georgia. If we're doing best teams, they're in. But they aren't in because of resume and recency bias. The committee talks out of both sides of their mouth. These aren't the best 4 teams, so why say that's the criteria? They're full of fricking shite.

To answer your question: no, a 2-loss Bama doesn't deserve to be in the Playoffs if they lost to AU. However, they didn't and every single championship team has to grind out a close win or two throughout the season.
Now I have a question: have you ever heard an argument, in your entire life, that didn't have a counterpoint? It's incredibly rare. People can disagree with the committee's decision all they want, but to say that it is objectively wrong is too far. Additionally, I don't know if you can say the committee talks out of both sides of their mouth, being it's a 13 person committee... of course their will be differing opinions, even among the members. They don't necessarily have one voice, and even if you view the committee chair as their mouthpiece, the committee chair / members do change. Just some of my thoughts

The way they've determined the champion has been a shitshow our entire lives. Doesnt make any difference how old you are. This year isnt any different. FSU has benefitted from it in the past. This year they were on the losing end. Life goes on.

#13 won't be an undefeated power 5 conference champ. The new playoff format will probably have multiple 2 loss teams in it. I doubt there will be as much pitching moving forward about "my 2 or 3 loss team is better than yours". I know I wouldn't be complaining if LSU didn't get in because we're on the fence with 3 losses.

Maybe not...but you'll damn sure pitch a whopper of a hissy fit when you get left out with 2 losses so the #23 ranked team can get in.
Oklahoma is sitting at #12 with two losses. They would get left out in order to give Liberty their spot.

How is it fair that Florida State gets to play a cup cake schedule for most of the year. It’s a lot easier to get up for one or two big games a year rather than having to be sharp an entire season. Tennessee last year is a very good example of that

Interesting that not only have they made a NY6 Bowl, they would also have qualified for the 12-team CFP (as an AQ) if it had been implemented this year.
And they would've played Florida State.
