I saw the thread about teams who won CFP nattys, but did not win BCS nattys.
It got me thinking. Would anyone care to guess who the last school to win it's first National Championship was?
If not, go ahead and downvote this and curse me out. Whatever you need to do.

Was it Florida in 1996?
This is a good question.

Colorado, tie with GT in 90? Or FSU in '93

1996 Florida is the correct answer.

I guess it would be UGA since all titles before 2014 are mythical.

This list is 100% correct. It only counts National Championships where the team was voted #1 in either the AP or Coach's poll.
All others are secondary organizations that schools individually decide to claim or not.

The fact that we haven't had a new champ in nearly 30 years is just an indication of how boring and top-heavy CFB has become.
Look at the 80s. All those different, new teams.

Post 2014 are "mythical" too because the CFP is still not sanctioned by the NCAA

We have a few come close to getting their first title.
1999 Virginia Tech
2010 Oregon
2014 Oregon
These 3 played in either a BCS or CFP playoff National Championship Game.
I think it was 1988 West Virginia played against Notre Dame in a bowl and had they won, they would have won the natty.
In 1965, Arkansas lost to LSU in the Cotton Bowl. They may have been voted #1 in the polls with a win. They claim one from 1964, but were not #1 in a poll.

I don't think we need the NCAA to sanction it. This used to matter before the championship was played on the field.
The CFP is canon to any serious organization that awards champions.

So then why 2014? The BCS settled it on the field too. The CFP just added 2 more teams. When the 12 team playoff starts are we going to move the cutoff to 2024?

Post WWII should count.. anything before that shouldn’t count.

The next first-time natty will likely go to Oregon. They have Nike money.
