The AP & Coaches Poll are no less arbitrary or more official than any other poll. Hence they are named not won. The NCAA only half a$$ governs CFB and they’ve never awarded a D1A/FBS championship. At best all they ever been is an iteration of a pageant. CFB won’t have an actual Championship until it has a single governing authority of all its member institutions and that organization gives its trophy to the winner of a set criteria for said championship.

This is solely based on AP and UPI. GT does claim 1952, which they have a legit claim to, and pre-poll claims in 1928 and 1917.

Most people consider the BCS the start of real championships, yes. No more splits after that, the last being 2003.
