Will LSU honor Nick Saban this year to mark the 2003 national championship?

LSU plays on the road at Alabama this year and both teams have a bye week the same week. Hopefully there's a week where Alabama has a morning game and LSU has a night game. Saban can jump on a plane for a 1.5 hour flight to Baton Rouge to reunite with his first national championship team on the field.

Was Spurrier still the HC at USC when Florida named the field after him or was that right after he retired?

I'm sure his teams will be honored multiple times for milestone anniversaries and Saban will attend once he's retired. He took part in our "Old Ware Skule" anthology DVD that was released ~10 years ago.

Has that ever happened with an in conference coach? I know Bama honored the 1992 team for their 25th and made sure it was a bye week for Clemson so Dabo could be there.

Yeah once he is retired I am sure. Pat Dye came back for the reunion of Alabama's 1971 team at Bryant Denny. He was on that staff

I'd really like to see him honored on field with some of the core cast from that 2003 team.
It might seem a little silly when he's still coaching against us, but he's done as much for the LSU program as anyone ever has, and more than most.

I think it would be petty and disrespectful not to. I know he's leading the enemy, but he awakened LSU football.

Great coach and I wish we could have kept him. Can you imagine how many national championships he would have won if he had stayed? Probably double what he has now

They should whenever he is available to come back home. We have a lot to thank him for. Nick Saban showed LSU what we could be.

I mean...it was. Both teams went to the White House on the same day. Not only that, your team's official website published this little article back in 2004:

BATON ROUGE — The champions of college football in 2003, LSU and Southern Cal, finally met on Tuesday only the teams didn’t meet on the gridiron, however, it was in the East Room at the White House.
The Tigers and Trojans were both in Washington D.C. as part of Champions Day at the White House. Other teams involved in Tuesday’s celebration were Southern Cal’s volleyball team, North Carolina’s women’s soccer team and Indiana’s men’s soccer team. All five teams won national titles last fall.
Prior to their meeting with the President, LSU and Southern Cal were both staged in the East Room, where paintings of former Presidents Washington and Roosevelt hang, for a team picture. Much like that of pre-game warm-ups in a football game, the Tigers were on the south side of the room lining up for their picture with President Bush, while the Trojans lined up for their picture on the north side of the room just 15 yards away.
As both teams were assembling for the picture, LSU coach Nick Saban and USC coach Pete Carroll talked for close to 10 minutes.
With the two teams facing each other for 15 minutes, President Bush entered the East Room at approximately 3:05 p.m. EST. President Bush struck the Heisman pose as he entered the East Room and headed for LSU and Saban. The President took several pictures with the Tigers as well as congratulating the team on its winning the BCS National Championship.
He then walked across the room for a picture with Southern Cal.
Following the team pictures, all five of the teams in attendance, reported to the South Lawn where the President congratulated each of the squads for their accomplishments both on and off the field.

No reason not to, he was the coach of that team 20 years ago.
