Time to start getting those hopes up! Natty or nothing here we come

Based off initial practice reports, it sounds like Sam is going to switch up the offense more than I would have hoped. We’ve apparently been running a lot of 12 personnel in the open sessions after basically never doing that under Briles. We’ll definitely have to pick up a TE or 2 in the portal to make that actually work I would think. I just can’t see is trotting out Nathan Bax and an underclassmen and scaring anyone.

Any reporting on whether they’re putting KJ under center more or are we still in shotgun 95% of the time?
Posted on 3/16/23 at 12:51 am to Jon Ham
Shotgun 95% of the time still just different alignments and scheme than under Briles. Looks like Pittman wants to move more towards the Georgia offense under Monken.
Personally I don’t understand the interest in moving away from the Art Briles influenced schemes that have proven to be extremely successful in the SEC (Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee) to a more pro style offense run by the best of the best athletes in the SEC (Georgia/Bama). It’s Pittman’s job security on the line so he’s free to make his own decisions but I’m skeptical it will be better than what we’ve had the last two years.

Especially when it’s KJs last year. And we have recruited for the Briles scheme (Singleton)
Posted on 3/16/23 at 7:46 am to TheCheshireHog
I knew when he hired enos that we were moving more towards the Georgia style but it didn’t surprise me. It’s a copy cat league and he’s a Georgia guy so of course he’s gonna see what they’re doing and want to try and emulate it. Hopefully it works.

I’m just afraid we’re going to try to put KJ I’m the Brandon Allen offense. 99% chance that goes extremely bad. Not sure KJ would make it through a whole season in that offense with the starting job.

Thinking more about the 12 personnel, remember both Rocket and Green are legit receivers, and KJ is like having a power running back in the backfield.
With any 12 personnel, you have a balanced threat of run v pass, but with our particular personnel we can also effectively shift into 3 wide (even 4 wide with a split out receiving TE) that still has the threat to run with our QB.
If opposing teams choose to bring in size to defend our power run, we can shift into 3/4 wide and present matchup problems. If the D prefers speed over size, we can maul them.

Yeah I said during the season, when our fans finally run off Briles we will be going back to a Georgia offense. Run based throwing to tight ends. We will be doing Bert/Nutt ball again. Lets out Alabama, Alabama…

The offense was always run-based even with Briles. Thats what SP prefers with his type of OL.

Hey bud, Briles did this to himself and I am a huge Briles fan.
He flirted with too many other programs while claiming his desire to be at Arkansas for a long time.
$$$$ period.

Yeah my thought is by trending toward what UGA does we’ll actually run the ball less next year. More of a 50/50 play call mix instead of 60%+ rushing of the past two years.

Never said he didn’t, I said from the beginning when Sam gets to choose his guy, it will be a tight end heavy, more run oriented guy.

They will be within the next year or two. Because with Kirby doing what he is doing, it has proven to Nick he can go back to it. And Nick builds programs to win championships. TCU/GA showed everyone you can molest a spread offense if you have a good enough defense. They typically go for smaller faster guys on D to be able to stay on the field longer. Also smaller linebackers the size of cornerbacks because they aren’t taking down as big of backs.
I’m not even saying this is a bad thing, I’m saying a tiger doesn’t change its stripes. With Tight Ends being more and more athletic, think Bauers, Gronk, Whittle, Kelce.. it makes sense. If you get two good ones you don’t need as many wide receivers. They become your slot play makers, like Drew Morgan/Edelman/Welker.

Also I’m not saying we aren’t going to throw anymore. I’m saying it won’t be as deep and it will be to freight trains running down field.

Pretty much what I’m saying. All I meant is we would go back to being an oversized Jumbo team.
Posted on 3/17/23 at 11:41 am to FayetteNAM
Now do I believe if Pittman could get away with it we would be a 90/10 run to throw? Yes. But there is no way he believes we can do that.

Shhhhh. Don’t tell anyone.
Arkansas held its final practice of spring drills before taking off for spring break. The team will return with the first of 10 more spring practices on Tuesday, March 28. Here's a more in-depth look at what happened during the 36-play scrimmage. The depth chart below reflects the order in which each player took the field with the first, second and third teams.
QUARTERBACKS
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 1 KJ Jefferson 6-3 242 R-SR
2.
10 Cade Fortin 6-3 218 R-SSR
3. 6 Jacolby Criswell 6-1 225 R-JR
4. 3 Malachi Singleton 6-1 225 FR
There was no change in the order the quarterbacks took the field on Thursday. Cade Fortin and Jacolby Criswell split second-team reps, while Criswell and Malachi Singleton split third team reps.
RUNNING BACKS
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 5 Raheim Sanders 6-2 237 JR
2. 7 Rashod Dubinion 5-10 213 SO
3.
0 AJ Green 5-11 205 JR
4. 21 Preston Crawford 6-0 205 R-JR
The running backs each rotated pretty freely with the first, second and third groups. Raheim Sanders was even in the scrimmage some with the third team. AJ Green's 62-yard run came against the third team defense on their very first scrimmage play. Many of those defenders were true freshmen who had never tackled a single time in college since it was also the first day in full pads.
OUTSIDE RECEIVER
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 11 Samuel Mbake 6-3 203 SO
2. 2 Andrew Armstrong 6-4 201 R-SR
3. 84 Marlon Crockett 6-4 206 R-SO
OUTSIDE RECEIVER
# NAME HT WT CLASS

INSIDE RECEIVER
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 14 Bryce Stephens 6-0 175 R-SO
2. 16 Isaiah Sategna 5-11 178 R-FR
3. 83 Chris Harris 5-10 184 R-JR
Arkansas came out in 12-personnel with two wide receivers, and then after a few plays they moved to 11-personnel and brought Bryce Stephens onto the field. On Tuesday, Sam Pittman said Stephens has stood out the most at wide receiver through the first four practices.
TIGHT ENDS
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 89 Nathan Bax 6-4 252 R-SSR
2. 9 Luke Hasz 6-3 245 FR
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 8 Ty Washington 6-4 247 R-FR
2. 42 Zach Lee 6-5 232 R-JR
Arkansas needs some more depth here if they're going to go with 12-personnel a lot, as it appears they will under new offensive coordinator Dan Enos. What has become apparent based on his action is the coaching staff is really intrigued with what true freshman Luke Hasz could bring to the table.

2. 72 Andrew Chamblee 6-6 303 R-FR
3. 79 Tommy Varhall 6-8 326 R-SO
I like this grouping, but there is still plenty of competition to be had. I like Brady Latham at left tackle, which we've seen him do in two of the four open practices after starting the last three seasons at left guard. I'd like to see a three-way competition at right tackle with E'Marion Harris, Andrew Chamblee and Devon Manuel. And then pick the best two guards out of the trio of Patrick Kutas, Ty'Kieast Crawford and Joshua Braun.
LEFT DEFENSIVE END
# NAME HT WT CLASS

RIGHT DEFENSIVE END
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 40 Landon Jackson 6-7 269 JR
2. 56 Zach Williams 6-4 256 SSR
3. 0 Nico Davillier 6-4 273 SO
I'm not entirely sure why, but John Morgan III and Trajan Jeffcoat never entered the scrimmage. I do recall seeing Jeffcoat at practice, and I'm pretty sure I saw Morgan, as well. Morgan and Jeffcoat had been working as the second team ends through the first four practices. Walk-on Jon Hill moved up with the third bunch, and Nico Davillier pulled double duty with the second and third teams.
LEFT LINEBACKER

RIGHT LINEBACKER
# NAME HT WT CLASS
1. 3 Antonio Grier 6-1 228 R-SSR
2. 35 Mani Powell 6-3 230 SO
3. 44 Kaden Henley 6-2 225 R-FR
I have mentioned how Antonio Grier is really muscled up, but I may have been doing a disservice to both Jordan Crook, Mani Powell and Christopher Paul Jr., who all looked really strong up in full gear. All four of those guys have really big biceps and triceps with rounded off shoulders. It's a good-looking overall young group of linebackers. Freshman Carson Dean had a sack in the scrimmage and has drawn some praise this spring from Pittman.

2. 31 Courtney Snelling 5-11 163 R-SR
3. 19 Dallas Young 6-0 197 FR
1* 17 Hudson Clark 6-2 185 R-SR
When the first team defense first came onto the field for the first six scrimmage plays, Hudson Clark was at safety. Then during the second segment of scrimmage plays, he was at nickel in place of Jaylen Lewis with Malik Chavis rolling with the first group at safety that time. The prior practice, Day 4, Clark was with the first team at nickel. This was a confusing group to put an order to in terms of a depth chart. When Al Walcott returns, look for him to take the starting nickel spot.

2. 16 Jaylon Braxton 6-0 184 FR
3. 39 Aidan McCowan 5-10 155 R-FR
There were a lot of walk-ons on the field at cornerback on Thursday, but overall this one of the better units on the team in terms of depth. Quincey McAdoo is expected to return from injury after spring break, and this summer 2021 starter LaDarrius Bishop should be back healthy. The Hogs also have a signed agreement with former 2022 five-star recruit and Georgia transfer Jaheim Singletary.
