Should NCAA reinstate the 1-yr Sit Out on Transfers?

My proposal:
You can transfer anywhere you want, for any reason, the coach doesn't have to release you, etc. You can go to an arch rival with the whole playbook in your hand. But you can't play for a year. You can practice, you can scrimmage, you can collect NIL. But you cannot play for 1 year. That sit-out year would not cost you a year of eligibility.
I'll be generous and say grad-tranfers are exempt. Just like the old rule.
I'll be even more generous and say that a transfer can take a redshirt year and still play in 4 games, if they haven't already redshirted previously. Or do the complete sit-out and have it not count as a redshirt year (even though it basically is). And still not cost a year of eligibility.
I think this is the quickest and easiest way to get the transfer portal reigned in, without lawsuits.

On the second non-grad transfer, you sit out one year.

These guys are on the clock as to when they can make money. Football and athletics in general are a young man's game.

No. Unless it doesn’t cost the player a year of eligibility.
As long as athletic scholarships are for 1 year and only renewable at the team’s option, a player should not be bound to the program past that year.
If scholarships were for multiple years I’d think a rule that said a player had to play at one school or sit out at the transfer school for the duration of the original scholarship would be fair.

Updated OP. My proposal would not cost the player a year of elig.
Unless they elect to take a redshirt year which can allow them to play in 4 games.

I can understand why the top talent teams would want to discourage their quality depth from leaving, but these kids don’t want to sit the bench. Why punish them for wanting to make the best of their opportunities?

I know this is a minority opinion but has the transfers and NIL really been quite as bad as some people make it out to be?
Seems the same teams are great, the same ones are decent, the same ones suck.
Now, if you wanted to create 6 or so conferences that made geographic and historical sense and ban any further changes that would really improve college sports for me.

You are still on the kool-aid.
Bama and Georgia, for example, aren't exactly bleeding 5 star depth to lesser schools. The opposite is happening. Diamonds in the rough at the smaller schools are getting poached by the big boys. Gibbs from GT to Bama as one example. RaRa from State to UGA is another.

I’ve said this numerous times, but Drew Sanders came to us for playing time. He made all American and was one of if not the best athlete on our team and he couldn’t start at Bama.
Do you want to deny that kid a chance to play?
Of course you do since your team may take a hit. We took some hits too but used the portal to help cover them.

This is good for Nebraska and others that needed the transfer portal to survive and build up a good roster quicker rather than wait a year or two to get those transfer players to play. It is what it is. I know not everyone is happy, but this is to set up the future of college football playoff that will have 8 or more teams.

Let these players go where they want ASAP so they can make as much money as possible as soon as possible. NFL players go from one team to another and, somehow, that league survives.
It is amazing how many of you want to restrain the income of people in a free market economy. Whether it is college football or anything, we need less regulations that keep people from making money.
Fortunately, we now have a Supreme Court that will stop communists, like the guy who created this thread, who want to interfere with people making money. God bless Capitalism.

If Drew Sanders is buried on the depth chart at Bama... Bama isn't taking any hit by losing him.
The 1 yr sit rules allows Sanders to take the bag and come to Arkansas. But he has to sit a year in order to be collegiately eligible. No different from being so many years removed from high school to be eligible. No different from taking so many credits and having a certain GPA to be eligible.
Give Sanders the bag. But he sits (unless he does what student athletes do... and graduates).

If you transfer to a team with a better record you have to sit out a year. If you transfer to a team with a worse record you get $100,000 good boy bonus.
