He's probably been doing it forever and that's his routine. He may be superstitious like some coaches are.

I’m no Briles fan, but the taped fingers are so KJ and the offense can see them since he motions in plays with hand signals.
It’s similar to catchers in baseball taping their fingers or painting their nails.
