I read the footballscoop article. It pretty clearly said "a position on staff".

He's a ILB coach with DC experience in FBS. I think it's possible that we are considering hiring him to coach ILB and be a co-DC and hire Leohnard as DC (play calling DC) and coach safeties. That way, the DC is involved with ILB through the co-OC, and Armstrong can learn for 2-3 years under Leonhard before Leonhard moves on to be a head coach somewhere.

That is just complete dot connecting by me, but it seems to make a lot of sense.

I hear you, and I’m definitely on board with the thinking (not that I would absolutely hate Armstrong as DC or anything), but as you mentioned, he’s an ILB guy and the rumors are that’s what he’s coming in as… and we all know Saban’s history with ILB coaches and the DC role. Maybe breaking the mold though - who knows?

T-Rob might be named DB coach, Armstrong ILB coach, and the new DC not have an assigned position.

He hasn't done it at Bama, but at LSU Muschamp was just the DC, while Kirk Doll was the ILB coach.
