Kirby made Sabah, very apparent at this point imho

A1abana hasn’t had a defense since Kirby left and they have 1 legitimate championship without him!

FACT: Coach Sabah’s career would be very similar to Ed Orgeron’s if not for Kirby Smart

Saban is still the GOAT, but Kirby seems to be the only son that could give his father a run for his money.

Is this trying to suggest the 2 teams they inherited were equal?

I always like how lists like this don't take Into account that Saban was at his 5th stop then with over a decade of college and NFL head coach experience while this 7 years happens to be kirbys first ever as a head coach. Kinda scary how high the ceiling might be.

All this shows me is that Smart has done less with more. Saban inherited a dumpster fire while Smart walked into a pretty good situation.

I love it. I can’t wait for the UGA melt when he leaves for the NFL and then comes back to college right as Saban is retiring. Will y’all be as salty as LSU? Or will you still love the coach that built you?

Saban had the better initial 7 years. Nobody is going to look good being compared to Saban. If Smart can keep winning over the next 10 years, then maybe. We'll see. I wouldn't count on it, though.

Looks like to me out of the 5 categories Saban leads in two, tied in another and the other two are so close its negligible. Kirby is doing a great job and he’s building a formidable program. They are very good. But it’ll be 5-10 years before you can honestly compare the two.

To be fair, one coaches in the west and at the time the west was the dominant division.

Kirby has done a fantastic job. Nothing else to say in that regard. I think Nick has 1 and a big maybe 2 more runs for Natty in him. Enjoy it UGA it’s a fun run. I have wonderful memories of going to National Championships with my family.

Kirby is a very good, probably great, coach. And at the moment, he has pulled the Georgia program slightly ahead of Bama. But the race is not over. And Kirby is many years of continued success away from being in the running for GOAT.

(Sorry for a logical, unemotional response; I know it is frowned on.)

From the outside looking in , I think both coaches will tell you that really good assistant coaches are hard to come by. Saban made who he is today, being an assistant at smaller schools. Look at Sabans early years , he had Mel Tucker, Mario Christobal, and Kirby Smart, Sal Sunseri as assistants . That’s a pretty stellar line up that were aggressive recruiters. You can’t fault Saban imo for trying to adapt to the spread, but I dont think it worked out and I hope from the defensive side of things they go back to murder ball.

The appearance of drop offs in the program imo were the combination of this and the three years where Saban had to completely replace multiple staff members, one year it seemed almost every damn position. I remember an interview with Saban regarding Kirby leaving to go to UGA , and he said “ Kirby had ceratainly been one of the most loyal assistants” he had ever had. That shite matters ….

Saban is a machine. Normally a coach would burn out or get lazy after 7-8 years of his dominance. He’s still at the top. Can Kirby sustain?

Apples to oranges. Kirby takes over a national power that Richt had built and built on that.
Saban took over a program that had been basically given the death penalty. From 2001-2003 Bama could only sign 12, 13, and 14 players in those three years and could not go to a bowl in two years. It wasn't until 2008 that Bama had 85 scholarshipped players on the roster again with 42 being freshmen or redshirt freshmen with no transfer portal to bail him out.

Saban took train wrecks and built them from scratch.
Kirby took over a team that was already near the top of their division.
