Lack of playmakers at WR this year

I honestly feel like this is the main problem with this years team. How did we go from Jeudy, Ruggs, Smith, Waddle, then Williams and Metchie, to what we have now? How do we fix it quickly?
Brooks seems like our only consistent WR and he wasnt even starting the first few games for some reason.

I don't agree that WRs are are main problem this season, especially when you look at why we lost the two games that we did.
Most of them are freshmen and sophomores, and IMO the talent is obviously there. Its a stinking, rotting horse at this point, but the main problem is BoB.

We rarely hit any deep balls this year and I know it's not on Bryce Young, our WRs don't get any separation.
Our passing game under BoB looked fine last year when we had Jameson Williams and Metchie who could take the top off of a defense.
(I am not taking up for BoB I do think he should be replaced)

That's true. It just seems like every time we run a deep route, there is ALWAYS deep safety help that keeps the WR covered. idk exactly what is going on there, I'm not an x and o guy. I just can't remember the last time we threw deep and the WR was 1 on 1 with the CB. It just seems like a scheme thing.

Also true, and the only thing I can think of is that Williams is just THAT fast where he could easily get behind the entire defense on any given play.
but I do agree with you that it was clearly an issue this season, I just think that there were worse issues this season that led to the demise of our NC aspirations.

I am not too excited about the young WRs we have either. Ruggs freshmen season he scored on damn near every pass he caught. Waddle was a threat to take it to the house every time he touched it as a freshman.
I am just not seeing that from any of the current young wrs. Maybe Aaron Anderson will end up being really good.

Actually I think Bryce has a shoulder injury which is significantly impacting his ability to throw downfield past 15-20 yards with any power and DC's are scheming because they know we can't hurt them downfield.
I do agree that our WR's are not separating on their short and intermediate routes, part of the cause being a downgrade from Williams/Metchie to our current group and part being a bland NFL scheme which doesn't help them to get open.

It's definitely a perplexing issue. I feel the issue is a combination of our OC's route trees and also Bryce's timing with the receivers. Our passing game never developed chemistry because Bryce hurt his shoulder and the young receivers had never got in a rhythm with him. Since he's been back he's been reluctant to throw deep balls and even his shorter routes he's only throwing to a receiver if he's wide open. Similar to the receivers in the 2017 season they're not running routes at full speed because of them not expecting the pass to be there during the route. Most of our successful passing plays have come when the play has broken down and Bryce is able to pull his Johnny Manziel impersonation. If he never hurts his shoulder I think we would've seen better production from our receivers.

Recruiting rankings and comparing those rankings to the guys in the past.
I suppose every so called 4 star and 5 star ranking is subjective from year to year. After all, none of these guys are on the level of Williams, Cooper, Waddle, Julio or Jeudy.
Bond might develop into a Williams. Brooks is not on the level of those guys and might develop into a 2nd receiver but he's not a 1 receiver type and needs an ace to take the heat off. Maybe Bama can get someone in the portal for next year. They need a difference maker on the perimeter which they don't have in this group.

Cooper and Riddley were outstanding as sophomores. Julio was essentially on his way to top ten draft pick by then.
Somethings just can't be developed.

Another thread of complaining.... You're not saying anything new.. that was posted last week, two weeks ago... answers is gonna be same.

It is ridiculous to think that we have to have first round wr talent in order to get guys open. This isn't the players, we have a coaching issue... Boob can't scheme a wr out of any empty parking lot.

I'm not going to argue that any of the guys on our roster are the same caliber of receivers as those guys, which are/were top tier NFL WRs, but our WRs don't have to be future NFL pro bowlers to be effective.

Not putting blame on players when all they run is bubble routes and crossing routes. We literally have 2 to 3 guys at times in the same spot, BOB has done a horrendous job this season and that’s being nice.

Can't argue with that. I tend to also believe a rigid, circa 2015 NFL offense does not help.

JaMo had 1600 yards and 15 TDs last year, just sayin.
Those who have pointed out that Bryce’s shoulder is part of the issue have a point, but even so, our wrs have shown no ability to be able to get many yac on the short passes they do catch.
Our best receiving option this year has been Gibbs and he plays rb.

I will agree with you that something is jacked up with our WR blocking, specifically on screens. There is almost always at least one unimpeded defender zeroing right in on the guy that catches the ball on those plays. It also seems like the defenders outnumber the amount of blockers we have out there.
Georgia, for example, runs a ton of those WR screens and there is almost always a ton of space for the WR to work with. Its night and day compared to what we are doing. Its mind-blowing and frustrating.

Just remember Coach Saban approves all offensive schemes. As well as defensive. Jimmys and Joes

I really had high hopes for Tyler Harrell to be our deep threat but it just never manifested due to injury. Saban said he was getting healthy but he has yet to make an impact. Hoping he can come back for one more but he may not be eligible.

He is listed on the roster as a Junior. Should have another year.

Rolltide.com has Harrell as a redshirt senior.
