Strength and Conditioning program needs more scrutiny IMO

Both OL and DL gets whipped consistently more than I've seen since the early Shula days. The coordinators catch rightful hell but replacing them is window dressing until we can get stronger on the interior LOS.

The problems with this program are at DNA level. S&C is one of a multitude of things that need addressed.

I think Saban needs to get Cochran back......not necessarily for the S/C position either.
WE need our swagger back. Cochran was key in developing that attitude. We don't have that anymore, it is in Georgia now. No body dreads playing us.

It's DNA but the bulk of the DNA of a football program starts in the weight room and chow hall. The S&C coach has more time with the team than all the other coaches.
We need Tommy Moffitt in the worst way IMO.

Remember when Cochran was walking around during stretches before the 2008 UGA game and yelled out “they’re wearing black because they’re going to their own f’ing funeral!!” That may not be exactly what he said, but it was close. That’s the swagger we need back. I completely agree with you. Cochran gave us an edge that made our players believe no one could beat them physically or mentally.

It’s so funny how the narratives change but nobody even knows exactly what the strength coach does. Everybody wanted Cochran gone because of “injuries” (which was fricking stupid) and was all in on the data driven guys. Now people want Cochran back lol

It silly they want him back. Just clutching to something representing the past.
The reality is we have tremendous talent we just need smarter people using them.
When we have smarter people? We win more.
When we have idiots? We don't

I just don't think we have the guys on the interior of the OL and DL that we used to. We've recruited the positions well enough, but we haven't had an absolute mauler at guard like we always used to have and our best interior DL is a guy that you take off the field on third and long. Tim Smith and Dale are good players and I think would start or at least see the field almost anywhere, but we had a string of 1st and second rounders at those spots almost every year.
Maybe we don't develop them as well anymore, maybe its the guys we are bringing in, maybe its some combination.

IMO, Cochran doing all that yelling was just personality. I'm talking about substance of the training. I don't even think bringing him back is the answer (I feel Tommy Moffitt is the better answer). But David Ballou has yet to build a sustainable national title program. Ballou and Rhea got here in 2020, and we're seeing what multiple years of this new age stuff bears. The easiest way to turn a bunch of 4 and 5 star linemen into busts is to put them in a training program that doesn't build them properly.
If you go back and look at LSU from 2000 til 2021, they were never weak in the trenches. They usually had poor QBs or a stubborn Les Miles.
So when YawYaw got there, all they needed was a competent QB. We need Tommy Moffitt IMO.

We're not getting it done in the DL, ILBer, and safety. That is 6 spots out of 11 and they're killing us. We can't get enough stops to win the games. Sure Pete might not be Pruitt but at some point the Jimmy and Joe's have to defeat the guy in front of them.

That's just my point. The trenches is where the most of the problems are. If we had a stronger front 7 on defense, the secondary wouldn't have to cover with perfection.
Also Bryce has been running for his life since he got here. I knew something was seriously wrong after that 4OT Iron Bowl when AUs defense was on his arse for the whole game. We simply have fallen off in the weight room, and many other issues that we see on Saturday flow from that core issue.

You make a really good point. Kirby has pulled a lot of DL guys that would have been at Alabama in the past. But our players are showing direct results of other problems, too, including being smaller and weaker than other teams. For 2 years now, we have faded in the 4th quarter. I guess what bothers me the most, is we have lost our mental edge, our toughness, and although I still support Coach Saban fully, he has lost his fire.

I don't even think its that necessarily. Like Jalen Carter for instance, he was probably going to Florida if he didn't go to Georgia.
I don't think we offered Wyatt or Jordan Davis.
Some of the guys of the type we need we didn't offer until a good while later than teams like TAMU, UGA, and Ohio St.
Even teams that recruit well have bad runs at certain positions. UGA hasn't recruited WR poorly at all and still hasn't really hit there big other than Pickens.
I do think its interesting that the guys that are either not developing or just not being recruited well are the bigger guys on the roster (Guards and DTs). Maybe that's a flaw in the strength program.

DL, ILBer,
Noticeable drop in production there. Even though I don't think our IDL guys are as good as we have become used to they should be getting a lot of good looks against one blocker with Anderson and Turner rushing on the outside.

safety
This is a lot of pressure on a kid but I really think Downs starts at S next year and Mitchell has a chance to as well.

You don't think there is also an attitude problem on this team? I see no fire, no desire to "make the opponent quit." A lot of that attitude is instilled by the S&C staff when they have the players in the summer. I'm not saying we need to get Cochran back, but we need someone who can instill that attitude in us.

Cochran probably isn't the answer, but we need a "hype man" that brings energy to the team. Both Kirby and Pruitt would jump around and fire the team up as well. I don't think I've ever seen Pete do anything except pick his nose or scratch his arse.
O'Brien being in the booth has been a failure. Not sure if Sark was up in the booth or not, but when Kiffen was OC and on the sidelines he brought energy.

The whole program needs a total evaluation and reset. Something is broken at the core level and until that culture gets back on track, nothing else matters. Ultimately this is on Saban. He has changed his coaching philosophy to a more kind and gentle approach and has refused to part with coaches who clearly aren’t up to snuff. He needs to get his edge back or think about retirement.
