Alabama's coaching staff the weakest it's been since 2007

...and its been this way since Sark left after 2020. We haven't had a good defensive staff since Pruitt left after 2017. It seems like Saban's rolodex has gotten very constrained and he's not growing his staff internally...so he ends up having to rehab NFL flunkies like Bill O'Brien.

It is also telling that a veteran-laden secondary is just abysmal and Saban's usually deeply involved with that group. It's been 2 seasons since the secondary has been able to defend a pass more than 10 yards downfield without committing DPI. In 2015, we had a young secondary that grew into a fierce unit - perhaps the best we've seen here - by 2017. I thought a similar development was going to happen starting in 2020 culminating with an all-time unit by 2022.

This team was too talented to lose a game this season. Pure and simple. They've already underachieved by taking a single L. If they take another L this season, the Bryne should be looking to recover some salaries from the staff.

I agree. I'll take an angry Pruitt or Jimmy Lake.

2007 coaching staff was better. I’d take Applewhite over O’Brien and there’s no comparison between Steele and Golding as DC.

Kevin Steele would be a massive improvement over Golden...but then again, who wouldn't be? Bama has the highest paid staff in the nation.

We're being robbed. Pure felony highway robbery.

Why isn't Saban "helping" Golding?

Saban needs to get on his knees and beg Pruitt to come back to T-town for his final few years. Pruitt was the best DC he ever had.

This loss will be worth it if it helps show Golding and Bob the door. If they are here next year it's gonna get worse and worse.

Agree, maybe it will make Saban hungry again instead of making commercials and buying car dealerships.

The fact BoB gets paid millions to be a failure is amazing.

Anyone know who we have on staff as an offensive assistant?

Do we have anyone that could take over for Bob asap? Sark was one time an offensive asst. Do we have anyone like that on staff?

Found this elsewhere, not just offense:

Dean Altobelli: Still at Alabama after arriving in 2010.

George Banko: Graduated from Alabama in 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Bert Biffani: Entering the third year at Alabama in quality control after working at both Tennessee and Texas A&M.

Nick Cochran: Former Maryland graduate assistant returned to Alabama last spring. He began with the program in 2013 as a student manager.

Dave Huxtable: Still at Alabama after interviewing for Charlotte defensive coordinator job, according to the Charlotte Observer. He was previously the defensive coordinator at NC State.

Will Lawing: Would be entering his second year at Alabama after previously serving as the tight ends coach for the Houston Texans from 2019-20.

Alex Mortensen: Now entering his fourth year in a second stint at Alabama, Mortensen was the receivers coach of the Birmingham Iron of the AAF after working as a graduate assistant and analyst at Alabama from 2014-18.

Mark Orphey: Previously served as Utah State’s defensive backs coach before coming to Alabama in 2021.

Zach Mettenberger: The former Georgia and LSU quarterback joined the staff after two seasons coaching at Nashville area high schools.

Nick McGriff: Comes to Tuscaloosa after working at Ole Miss as an analyst last season. He was the South Carolina long snapper from 2014-18.

Derek Dooley: The former Tennessee head coach was most recently the New York Giants’ tight ends coach under former Alabama staffer Rob Sale. Dooley previously worked under Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins.
Graduate assistants

Braxton Barker: Returned to Alabama as a grad assistant after previously entering the transfer portal.

Manrey Saint-Amour: Now the offensive line coach at Charleston Southern after spending last year as a grad assistant.

Derek Dooley is the only other person on staff with playcalling experience in college.

I just looked up Dooleys history, none of it is any good.

I'd rather have Mettenberger as a play caller. Ex qbs are usually creative.
