It's really not that hard to figure out. #1 was just there as a place holder because they finished last year #1 and hadn't lost yet. They haven't played a top team yet and even had a few lackluster weeks. Now in week 8, another team that's also undefeated and has just beaten a top team gets rewarded. It won't happen because pollsters are largely stupid, but it should.

What makes Bama a top team? They were just there “as a placeholder” because they finished strong last year and hadn’t lost yet, they even struggled with some mediocre teams.
It’ll all work out. I don’t think the polls are going to drop us after winning 55-0.

Considering Oregon's ranking and what they've done since, the beatdown put on them is as impressive as a home win vs. Bama.
I'm not knocking Bama. But they are not the same as they used to be. Still a great team, but it's a notch down where they once were. A&M almost beat them last week. Texas, not exactly a behemoth, almost beat them with their backup vs. Bama's Heisman winner.
Georgia looks like the more complete team right now on both sides of the ball compared to UT. The defense is average at best.
