Tom Petty, much like UF's football program: dead as a doornail

Wait until you see what I do during the Tom Petty tribute this year

here's what I woudl liek to know, totally from a non-trolling perspective. Totally serious.
Why did UF wait until TP died to start really driving that train? I don't recall UF and tom petty ever being linked when he was alive aside from just "he spent some time there" , but after his death its' like UF has completely gone 100% all in on the tom petty connection. Why did they not celebrate him as much while alive? Or did they and I just wasn't paying attention ?

I’ve said it before, but I think “I Won’t Back Down” takes away from “We Are the Boys from Old Florida.” Although “We Are the Boys” probably isn’t long for this world with a line like “where the girls are the fairest.”

Tom Petty was the most unattractive rock star in the history of rock n roll, no wonder that he came from Gainesville.
Did like some of his tunes though like running down a dream, American girl, don't come around here and Mary Janes last dance.

Man, y’all talk like he actually went to school there.

When did he graduate from UF?
How much money did he donate to the school?
We know the answers.. Florida is really stretching it here. He had no relationship to the school
