quote:
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."
The example Jesus gives of such practice is the hypocritical gestures that the Jews of the time were doing where they were drawing attention to themselves for the sake of boosting their own image and reputation in the eyes of the people. "Giving in secret" was commanded in contrast to drawing attention to yourself publicly for your gifts of service. The Bible teaches us that all glory should go to God (1 Cor. 10:31), and when we make a spectacle out of ourselves for the purpose of our own glory, we're robbing God of what belongs to Him.
So, should we pray alone, or out in the streets?

You should pray in such a way as to please God. Sometimes this will be in secret. Sometimes in public.
But if you are doing it to get attention, then the prayer is not to please God but to get benifit for yourself.

I'm just guessing, but I'd think that God doesn't really care where you pray, as long as it's with a pure and contrite heart.

What is commanded against is the public prayer of an individual that is meant to boost the person's standing before the people. It's the same thing as giving service to others for the purpose of personal reward rather than the glory of God and the building up of others.
Motive is important, which is exactly what Jesus was telling those who want to learn.
