It’s a false statement that Mizzou brought the STL and KC markets.

The state of Mizzou doesn’t care about college football regarding Mizzou. Same for KC. Mizzou has never been that good at basketball. 3 Elite 8s all time and nothing more?

Both of those markets were already watching SEC ball as those both have a ton of SEC transplants. The KC market is and was watching Kansas basketball. I bet you haven’t seen much of an increase in the SEC in regards to tv from the state of Mizzou.

What is there was already watching the SEC

Lived in Stl and attended Mizzou when They played Arkansas bball in 80-90s. First hand nobody in stl knew anything about Arkansas. Secondly, those were big 12 days. Outside of own conference it was a big 10 broadcasts. Definitely knew who Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama was, but outside of that no clue. Currently I would say KC is still big 12 lean and stl divided between sec and big 10.

This is all BS. I have lived in St Louis since 95 and I never met or talked with anyone who was a fan of SEC sports until Mizzou joined the SEC. It was all Big 12 with a few Illinois fans. Saying nobody in St Louis cares about Mizzou is flat out wrong. Not surprising coming from golfer. Now when it comes to baseball, nobody gives a shite about Mizzou. That is definitely Cardinals.

Missouri has multiple fandoms but mizzou is the only fbs power 5 school in the whole state so it gets plenty of attention. The year we joined we were 12 and 14 in overall viewership based off our markets.

Every time people parrot this I roll my eyes because it's Usually an arkansas fan who is from a state that couldn't even get a pro soccer team to setup shop.

You don’t understand how it worked back then. It didn’t really matter the total viewership of Mizzou, it only mattered that there was ENOUGH demand so that the SEC Network could sell its product to local/regional cable providers to be included in their “sports package”. Once you were included in that package it didn’t matter if ANYONE actually watched. SEC Network was still getting their $1.50 (or whatever) per month for being included in the package even if the subscribers only bought it to watch Cardinal baseball.

That is all changing now as we move to a more streaming based model.

It is absolutely true. When Mizzou is good, it dominates those markets.
