Sark at Texas might be a concern in the near future.

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian invokes Nick Saban, says Longhorns must avoid 'rat poison' of sudden praise

quote:

"First of all, to quote my old boss, we've got to be careful of the rat poison of people telling us how good we are, which is important," Sarkisian said. "A week ago, everyone told us how bad we were. Now this week, everyone wants to tell us how good we are. We've got to be careful to quiet the noise outside of our building and focus on us."

quote:

"Like I told the team, in particular the defense, but the team in general: We've now created a new standard of what's acceptable, what is our standard of play," Sarkisian said. "And now we're held to the standard of defense that we're playing. We need to meet that standard and exceed that. So now's not the time to relax; now's not the time to take a step back. Now's the time to push even harder to go to a new level."

quote:

"I don't really care," Sarkisian said. "I care about our team. The perception doesn't matter. The perception was we were supposed to walk out there and get blown out. So I don't know. So much for perception."

Didn’t listen to the whole thing but those seem like sound bites from a coach that won. Confusing.

A new standard of losing by less than you thought you were going to?

That was the most competitive we’ve been with a top team in a while.

I don’t care what anyone says, that was improvement.

He's good at saying the right things in front of the media. Its pretty obvious Saban changed his life for the better. Talking about how Saban taught him self discipline reminds me of someone that really needed to go into the military.

Ewers is out, it was a 120 degrees on Saturday and the most physical game they have played to date under Sark. They are giving 13.5 to a solid UT-San Antonio at home and may be looking ahead to their first Big 12 game at Texas Tech the following week. Classic let down game. Load up on UTSA. This is their Super Bowl.

Sounds like he needs to remind his team they just lost. As in your opponent scored more and you got the L. You lost!

I'd prefer to hear this after a big win, but he's not exactly wrong.

After a crushing defeat to OU, everyone was patting themselves on the back and the fanbase-wide sentiment was "well, we'll see them again in December!" Pretty sure Sarkisian said something to that effect as well.

Texas would go on to lose the next 5 games in a row. The majority of which they had a lead in the 4th quarter and/or OT.

This has been the program's problem. If they prepare and play like they did against Alabama for the remainder of the games, they can meet some of their lofty goals. If they congratulate themselves for "proving the country wrong by giving Alabama a close game" then a slew of losses is going to grace them before the season ends, just like 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021 (to name a few)
