When will Auburn fans start claiming they don't care about football that much?

We all know Auburn fans are just as ate up with college football as the rest of us, if not more so. But, we've also all seen their canned response anytime their season takes a turn for the worse (which is often): "Hey, it's just a game. It doesn't bother me that much. I'm just glad my college football fandom doesn't define who I am as a person." They will say this while wearing an Auburn hat and a faded "Hey Nick, got a second?" t-shirt. And Lord help you if Auburn should wind up pulling out an improbable victory, because they will go from "This isn't that important to me" to screaming in your face like a deranged banshee at the drop of a hat.
So when does the "I really don't care that much, it's just a game" refrain start being thrown around this year? The Iron Bowl? The UGA game? Are they already there?

I think they've already accepted their fate this year.

The Auburn fans I work with have resigned themselves that they'll finish somewhere between 5-7 and 8-4, and will likely get blown out in the DSOR and IB.
I'm sure when basketball gets closer they'll just begin acting like they read about the Auburn football game in the newspaper on Sunday while also describing in detail the entire spread of food Bruce Pearl cooked at his team BBQ.

I quit caring when we lost to South Carolina for the 2nd year in a row.

Honestly, I don't care much about fb this season. Of course, I will still watch/attend most of the games but expectations are low. I am more interested in seeing our rivals fail this year.
Now Basketball is a different story...

The ones that do claim they don't care, are also soft AF.

The OP laid out this bait thinking we were all going to be riding high on the hog until we lose a game without realizing we are all pretty much where you are and he won't get the reaction he's hoping for in a few weeks.

Somebody at Auburn better do something to change the mood very soon. The apathy I've seen from their fanbase towards football is unhealthy in any SEC program not named Vandy.

A little success on the field or on the recruiting trail would go a long way.
We are still here and watching, but most of us are pretty honest about the state of affairs and the hill that we have to climb to be competitive with the upper 1/2 of the SEC.

No, Auburn fans are just like most of CF fans. The game has come down to a few teams being in a beauty contest. The same teams every year, even when they screw up and lose a game. Having a Committee of 12 "has been" officials determine who wins it all. Having a post season of Bowl games were the stars choose to sit out due to injury. No, the old excitement of CF is dead, maybe blame ESPN. Not going to change until they expand the playoffs and have earned positions in the playoff.

Of course, I will attend/watch most of the games but I am mostly looking forward to Basketball season…

I recall at the time (2020) that the first one was pretty much the nail in Gus' coffin, at least according to the Auburn folks I know.
Not that it wasn't simmering already, but I think that's really when the wheels got put into motion.

Probably when they lose to State in Starkville to go 5-4.

I mean - did you care as much about football during the Mike, Fran, Mike and Mike era?

Yeah that was bad. The worst was his floppy-titted arse dancing around in the locker room after the Miss State "win" that year though.

Now NIL is going to really kill CF. Teams who were used to paying under the table will not be able to keep up with the really rich. The player will lose any of the humility of a struggling college student and the game will be a bunch of free agents. CF is going to become a dying sport is thing do not change soon.

Same. I'm actually going to a game or two for the first time in a while because my son is there now.
I'll always watch and support, but I've got to see some more from Harsin before I'm 100% back on the train.
