If the Big 10 goes to 20 teams, which the commissioner hinted at, I would expect the SEC to also add teams. History has shown that when conferences get large, they eventually split to form smaller conferences. Look at the history of the Southern Conference as an example. It basically split into the SEC and ACC. In more recent history, remember when the WAC expanded to 16 teams and then split to form the Mountain West Conference? If the SEC does grow to 20 teams or so, I predict that it will eventually split into a smaller conference of 9 or 10 core teams. It would be an opportunity to shed some of the lite weight teams and create a more solid power conference. Lifetime SEC teams like Vandy would definitely be left out and some of the current SEC teams might find themselves being replaced by Clemson, FSU or whoever the hot program is in the 20 team SEC. I think most SEC fans would love to scale down instead of adding. Ironically, it's the best chance for the SEC to get closer to a stronger pre 1990's version. Time will tell.

The problem with that concept, is that there is still a pecking order within conferences.

Take Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Auburn, Florida. That's 8 strong programs. Put them all in the same conference, and someone will be 1st, someone will be 8th.

I believe the SEC will split up. The academic schools will separate from the athletic first schools.

Who do you think the academic schools are?

Why would academic schools leave? Are you saying the others are holding them back? Vandy would like a word.

The Southern Conference was something like 25 teams before the SEC broke off.

I think that the Big 8 (the current Big 6+ Texas and OU) should break off from the rest of the SEC. We’ll see how much the Little 8 of the SEC is actually worth.

And, even better, we’ll probably see Tennessee going 0-7 in conference every year, with the closest loss being by about 17 points.

So tell us, which AD's of the so-called runt programs vote for their demise? You know how this works, correct?

The departing members would create a new conference under a new name. The left behind teams would actually keep the SEC name. It’s like when 8 WAC members left to form the MWC.

But if the Big 8 (Florida, Georgia Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Texas and Oklahoma) broke off, their new conference would certainly be considered more prestigious than the conference of the left behinds. Even though the left behinds would technically keep the SEC name.

This may be the Rantiest of Rant threads ever. We’ve now gone past speculating about further growth in the conference and which teams might be added, to discussing the makeup of subsequent splinter leagues. Truly a work of art.

Everyone keeps throwing out UVA.

VT has wayyyy more viewership. If you got look at Ross Dellenger Twitter he posted a great breakdown of data amongst schools and who brings what to the table.

Clemson, FSU, NC State, Va Tech, UNC bring most viewers in that order.

GT left the SEC and wound up in the ACC after beiing independent for years. What other schools left the SEC and are now in the ACC?
