Texas A&M Aggies top annual underachiever tiers of college football
Congrats Aggies on your first #1 ranking since the Great Depression

quote:
I recognize it's never fun for fans to see their team headlining college football's underachiever tiers. Texas A&M has one of the largest and most prideful fan bases in the sport, so much so that it is synonymous with a number, 12. And although the home of the 12th Man was an easy pick to lead off the tiers, the truth about a team's lack of performance can sting.
quote:
Since 1994, when R.C. Slocum led Texas A&M to a 10-0-1 record and a No. 8 final ranking, the Aggies have lost four or more games 23 times. The team has two 11-win seasons and eight nine-win seasons during the span, including a 9-1 mark during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. Conference play has been especially tough, as Texas A&M has at least three league losses in 20 of the past 23 seasons. The biggest mark against the Texas A&M program is a lack of championships -- none in the SEC (league or division) and only one in the Big 12, coming nearly a quarter century ago in 1998, when Slocum still coached the Aggies. The most damaging demerit for Texas A&M is zero national championships since 1939. Since then, plenty of programs with fewer resources and natural luxuries -- Maryland, Syracuse, Michigan State, Pitt, BYU and Colorado, to name some -- have achieved what continues to elude the Aggies.

quote:
Texas A&M seems to have it all: a massive and dedicated fan base, deep-pocketed donors, sparkling facilities and a location in southeast Texas with prime access to Houston and other fertile recruiting grounds. Texas A&M spent nearly $485 million to renovate Kyle Field, gave Fisher a $75 million guaranteed contract and last fall announced a $205 million facilities plan for football and track. Few programs have as many celebrated traditions as the Aggies, from the 12th Man to the Midnight Yell. But those ingredients haven't led to nearly enough notable on-field accomplishments. Texas A&M has produced great players, including 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, but hasn't parlayed mini breakthroughs (2012, 2020) into sustained periods of success.

Congrats Aggies on your first #1 ranking since the Great Depression

Everything a program could need to be successful, yet...

I agree. We have the resources to be better than most anyone out there. We just aren't

They claim 1997 and 2010 Big 12 titles even though they got destroyed 54-15 by Nebraska in the title game in ‘97 and didn’t even play in the title game in 2010. Everyone gives Bama shite for claiming fake natties but fake conference titles are another level of pathetic.

The guy made no excuses and admitted the OP was correct, and you slam his nose right into his own post. I can’t stand the Aggie posters on this site - I think they’re annoying as hell. But if our fans continue making posts like this, then we really can’t complain.

There are a subset of posters spanning nearly all teams on this site hanging around that, well... let's just say they deserve each other.
As for the OP, yeah. Any of us that have been around A&M for any length of time know it. We've lived it year after year. Most of the time it's been because our AD always cheaped out on the program. Also-ran coaches, half-assed facilities projects, cheap ugly stadium upgrades, etc.
I know y'all get aggravated when we bring up how much we're investing in our program, but (aside from the obvious trolls) we talk about it mostly because we've been waiting so damn long to see our Admin actually invest what's needed to compete, and we're happy as hell finally see it happening. Not because we are trying to rub anyone's faces in it (again, aside from the obvious trolls).
Now we just have to see if it'll pay off on the field. Looking forward to the next few seasons.

As an underachiever, do you at least get credit for being #1 on that list?

Everytime Jimbo Fisher gets in front of a camera, he sounds coked up.

Oh and holy shite, Nick Saban really fricked up his recruiting class

Also, it's a bit cherry picked to say conference titles have always eluded A&M and only discuss Big 12 and SEC eras, when A&M put up 6 outright SWC titles in the decade immediately preceeding formation of the Big 12 (really 7, but we were on probation in 94, so the second place teams split the title).
Winning a conference outright 7 times in 14 years isn't nothing. We've had some good runs here and there. But the last 20 years have been pretty rough overall.

Are you talking about the years Jackie Sherrill was busted for? They probably didnt want to further humiliate aggy and bring up cheating.

Very damning indictment. All hat no cattle as they say in Tejas.
