The Truth About Arik Gilbert

This young man was the Gatorade Player of the Year in high school. He had all the physical tools. He was playing as a full grown man among boys at Marietta. He never really had to work hard, never really had to mentally prepare for being at a higher level with bigger stronger faster guys. He had always just relied on his natural physical abilities.
The adjustment to the next level is one that is often shocking to late adolescents. Not just in sports. Academically, many smart kids coast through high school making straight A's and never really having to study, they were just really smart. Then they get to college, and get a reality check after their first semester that you can't just coast along like you did in high school. Some don't make it. Not because they are stupid, but they don't get over that hump, can't make that adjustment fast enough to avoid failing or dropping out.
Back to Arik Gilbert. He did not adjust well to the next level. Hurting him was all the hype around him. When a regular student gets a reality check of a C- on a test and he's never gotten less than an A his entire life, he's humbled but doesn't have 100,000 people watching him and making fun of him and shite talking him. It's up to the coaches and handlers to work through these things with the incoming freshmen athletes, especially the ones with the highest accolades. It's not a great mental space to be in.
Apparently LSU didn't do a very good job with this, and in hindsight, we see O and company had checked out around this time of Arik's struggles at LSU.
He wanted out. Lots of kids want out. Transfers are common now, not unique events.
He came back home to Georgia and continued to struggle. He was given time off from the team for mental health, yet still supported and helped daily. His scholly was never yanked. He never threatened to transfer. He just need time to heal and adjust.
The happy news is that now he's ready to go. Better than ever, physically and mentally.
Everyone who is a fan of college football should cheer this student athlete and root for his success. Arik isn't so different from most of us at some time in our lives, particularly that age.

This would make sense if he had played badly but he had one of the best seasons a freshman tight end has ever had in the SEC so it doesn't really add up.

Blaming LSU is kind of odd, they didn't have a ton of contact with these kids due to Covid and all. He also wasn't physically at LSU that long, he's been at Georgia far longer than he was at LSU.

I hope the best for him. He seemed to have a lot of mental demons while at LSU.

Kid has a million dollar frame and 10 cent motor
Hopefully he fixes that because he has only himself to blame if he doesn't succeed

DirtyDawg's clown story about laced weed is one that I've never heard before and I'm kind of a big deal so I would have heard about it. I think he just made that up to frick with yall.

On the LSU 247 page, a few of our legit posters said he smoked synthetic weed and had a bad reaction.

Didn’t that supposedly happen to Stingley too?
Posted on 8/7/22 at 3:45 pm to deeprig9
The guy won’t make it through 4 games this season

Night before the Miss St game in 2020. From what I understand, our compliance department was so strict that players were smoking synthetic weed so it didn’t show up on a drug test. Tyrann Mathieu did the same thing at the end at LSU. I think Scott Woodward and LSU got the compliance department to be not as strict as they were.

Yes. Arik was apparently the one that dabbled in it and got Stingley on it.
ETA: he was a locker room cancer. Hopefully he turns it around for his own sake

He has mental health issues and that’s a fact. You left out the part about him cussing out Kirby. We did what we could for the kid and let him stay at lsu while not on the team

This is correct. Pressure doesn't get turned up until the lights are turned on. I am hoping he can fight through the problems and do well, not only because he is at Georgia but because I like to see people that struggle succeed through hard work.

It was reported that that was a rumor and didn't happen, iirc. Not sure why people read something on the Rant and automatically assume it is true. "I read it on the Rant!"
