“We are so excited to have this opportunity,” head coach Eric Musselman said. “First, we will get 10 extra, full practices to prepare for the trip. Second, the ability to play others, not just scrimmage each other, will be critical for this team with so many new faces. Third, this trip will help set the tone for this year’s team as they continue to learn our system, learn each other’s games and learn about their teammates as people. In addition, we will take this opportunity to learn from and about different cultures and just have a greater world view in general.”

College basketball transfer portal: The 10 best defenders on new teams in 2022-23

quote:

JALEN GRAHAM, ARKANSAS

quote:

One of Arkansas' main offseason objectives was adding more defensive studs to its frontcourt. Arizona State transfer Jalen Graham is just that. Graham was in the 92nd percentile defensively, per Synergy. He was very good in spot-up and post-up situations. Opponents shot just 26.2% against Graham in 71 spot-up opportunities. Graham is 6-foot-9 with a very long wingspan that he knows how to use effectively. Arkansas has length all over the place, but Graham's defense will stand out early and often.

quote:

RICKY COUNCIL IV, ARKANSAS

quote:

Ricky Council IV quickly became one of the most prized players out of the transfer portal because of his defensive instincts and measurables. Arkansas scooped up the Wichita State stud to add to its impressive display of perimeter defenders. Council was in the 87th percentile in overall defense last year, per Synergy. The 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard is so comfortable blowing up pick-and-rolls. When he got put on an island, Council put on a show. Opponents shot just 3-for-16 from the field in those situations. Council is super competitive and takes the challenge personally. It's really easy to see why Eric Musselman and the Arkansas coaching staff wanted him so badly.

This team has so much potential and have leadership and confidence from top to bottom. When it all comes together through games played and unselfish behavior this will be a hard team for anyone to deal with.

I can’t help but believe that we are in for a very exciting year come March.

ANTHONY BLACK, ARKANSAS

quote:

Anthony Black missed the start of Arkansas’ summer practices because he was helping Team USA’s U18 team win a gold medal. When he came back, Black immediately stunned the Arkansas staff with how well he knew the playbook.

“I’ve never seen a player come in the middle and literally knew almost our entire playbook that we’ve known so far,” Arkansas coach Eric Musselman said. “I was kind of speechless. He literally was asking about third and fourth options on plays and we have guys who are here from Day 1 who are still trying to figure out the second option. I thought I was with an NFL veteran QB who was asking questions and had just missed a couple OTAs or something."

Black’s eye-popping talent and keen basketball IQ has been extremely evident throughout the first month of the season. With Nick Smith Jr. sidelined with an injury, Black stepped up as the go-to decision-maker for Arkansas, and the Hogs' effective field-goal percentage jumps nearly 5.0% with Black in the game, per Pivot Analysis. He just creates good shots. Even against stiff competition in the Maui Invitational, Black was the best player on the floor. He had 26 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals against Creighton.

Black's usage rate has dropped a tad now that Smith is back in the mix, but the 6-foot-7, 200-pound freshman just looks like a pro. His positional size is off the charts. He’s shooting 40% from 3-point range. Black has flashed some terrific moments as a playmaker and as a defender, especially against pick-and-rolls. There’s still room to grow, but Arkansas is getting everything it wanted and more out of Black through the first nine games of the season.

I'm glad he's a hog but if nike Smith Jr is a top 5 pick in this year's NBA draft I will get a sex change. No way in hell

Starting to think Anthony black is more of a SG than a PG. Doesn't really understand or create pace everything we do is super hard cause we don't push the ball. Would like to see Ford/ black / council on the floor together

Keep the ball in RC4 hands. Offense flowing much smoother
