Where would you send your son?

My oldest son is a junior in high school. We visited u of a Friday, he loved it. It's his dream. He's a very talented trumpet player and wants to be a music major. I have 4 boys between the ages of 17-13 (we adopted 2 from Foster care a couple years back) there is no chance we can afford to pay for these boys all to go to college so we made the decision a long time ago that wherever they went would be on them. I'm not signing on any loans for them. He has a job and should have about 30k when he graduates high school.
What are some schools we should be looking at besides u of a?

in all honesty, with those financials in the picture... Have him attend where his most interested Major is offered at the best cost.
Get on the fafsa, all the scholarships that they can.
I have a college freshman at this time attending a university that is 32 grand a year. with all of the finances we pulled together from scholarships, aid... about 3 grand a year is our total output

This is my opinion… as someone who went to UA and took out student loans for my education… I would let him go to UA if he wants to. My time in Fayetteville were incredible and full of amazing memories.
It was the best decision I ever made. It was my dream school and I don’t regret it one bit. You could save a good chunk by not going to UA freshman year because student housing is stupid expensive and you were required to live on campus your freshman year when I went there. Go to another school for 1 year and transfer over would save him a ton.

If money is the issue…go community college route first year. Most of that first year cost is the gauging of housing. Transfer hours over.
It’s also a good gauge for you as a parent to make sure the kid will apply himself and money isn’t wasted.
That’s Hawgeye as a parent speaking…and it’s former athlete Hawgeye speaking as well, with experience transferring…
I’ve got a couple young ones…they love Fayetteville…I’ll encourage them to go…but I’ll also make them earn everything. If they don’t get enough scholarship money, they’ll start and get their Gen Ed’s continuing to live under my roof and then transfer.
Maybe I’m a hard arse…but I am paying for their school now with private school ($18k/yr) every chance there is for them to earn something, I make them.
Saying all that…getting a degree from the UA is a wonderful experience and is part of our family tradition…we actually walked senior walk this past weekend and they tripped out because blackened gum is in on letter in my name now.

I could afford to send them all to my alma mater, Ouachita, but I just refuse to be on the hook for their education that they may or may not complete. Maybe I'm a bad parent for that but that's just me.

If you are concerned about them send them to a CC for a year or two to have them show they are serious about it.

Does the state not offer special assistance/scholarships for foster kids?

Community college will save you some money on the first couple of years. I did a few different schools in my college career.
It was only once I did community college with a real labor job each summer that i really even wanted to deal with getting through college. College is a huge pain in the arse as far as the school and way too much fun to be had around the people that are there

Not sure what you can do with a music degree that justifies 6 figures of debt.

That was kind of my point. I’m willing to pay now which would give them great opportunities for colleges when they graduate. From there, they’ll earn what they get.
Again, maybe I’m an arse.

I know at the community college here, UACCM, if you go two years and do well (yes I don’t know specifics) but you can then transfer to UA and pay the same tuition you paid here. I assume that’s the same deal at all cc’s affiliated with the UA.

This is something else I’ll be talking to mine about…just getting a degree to have a degree isn’t what we are looking for. Choose something based on income potential and if you do have to take out loans, choose something that allows you to have the income to pay those off quickly.
As each year goes by, some tech and trade schools become more appealing. UofA is great for business, nursing, law, architecture…but I’d probably try to talk mine out of any type of education degree or art degree. But that’s me, and I’m an arse hole parent.

It is. When you're a music/band kid though you lose those 2 years of instruction. It's impossible to complete the music Ed program with starting in CC. We've got Cossatot CC UA here, they offer the same program.
His dream is to march on the field and be in the A. He's wanted to do that since he picked up a trumpet. He's busted his butt to be one of the best in the state. All of this is coming up because when we toured the other day he found out the max music scholarship is 5k per year. He sees that 26k figure and realizes that 5k doesn't do much damage. He's got a 25 ACT right now.

Have them join the air guard. If they are afraid of deploying, the LR maintenance and ops don't deploy. They are a training unit.

Does he go to school after enlistment or how does that work

There is some financial assistance for foster kids. Their counselor should be able to help with that.
I would say let them go wherever they want if they are on the hook for the bill. Really the only school in the state I wouldn’t send my own kid is UAM…. Unless they were going into forestry.

Don’t forget about the lottery scholarship btw. It’s 14K towards a four year degree.

UA has a foster care scholarship that pays 9k per year for a kid who was in care for one year. I’d see if your kids qualify.
quote:
Fostering Success Scholarship Annual award up to $9000 per year Renewable for 4 years (5 years for Architecture students) with 30 hours per year and 3.00 GPA Awarded to students who have been in foster care from Arkansas (in home) for at least one full year, who have need or who have been declared as independent through FAFSA, and who have demonstrated academic potential. Students selected as Fostering Success Scholars will also participate in a peer and faculty mentoring program. Fostering Success Scholars will have opportunities to get involved in engagement activities on campus and in the community. Students interested in applying for this award should call the Academic Scholarship Office at 479-575-4464. Each applicant will have an advisor assist them with the full application process which includes an application for admission by January 15th (apply.uark.edu), completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and the University of Arkansas Scholarship application by February 1. Students are encouraged to complete the process (with their University of Arkansas advisor) by the early consideration deadline of Nov. 15th as they may also be eligible for additional awards.
