Is the Mizzou job that bad or was this hire in the bag from the start?

Beginning to wonder if the Mizzou job is so bad that Gates is the only one who would take it. Assuming that not to be the case, sure makes me wonder if there was a real "search" for a new coach. If the story is true that the coach's wife is a good friend of the AD, a reasonable suggestion is that there never was a search and this hire has been in the works for weeks. If the coach's wife is given a job in the athletic department, it will be a really BAD look on this whole process (similar to the out of the blue firing of Sterk and hiring of the current AD). I thought I would never see the day when the athletic department would reach Barbara Uehling levels of incompetence but here we are.

Clearly, after a thorough, nation-wide search, Gates was the obvious choice.

I’m guessing they are on a committee together advancing women in athletic departments.

She tied her career to a basketball coach named Darrell Gates. I wouldn't have wanted to do that if I had other options.

It is Missouri. You have St. Louis. You have a state that loves basketball. You can recruit the SW, the South, and the Midwest. Not to mention you can pay SEC money.

You should have coaches coming in zombie apocalypse like waves. I don't get it. I mean he might do great there and that would be wonderful. But with a good coach Missouri is a perennial NCAA tourney team with a shot of making the Sweet 16/Elite 8. You should be talking about a proven winner.

She had the money for the buyout nearly 3 months ago. Boosters lined up to pay for it, and were enthusiastic for a new coach. Been looking quietly at candidates for 3 months. And we get this? CM take 2?

It stinks to high heaven.

Always cool when you can hire your friends and give them millions of dollars.

That is what may get the AD fired if Gates flopped big time. The point of this hired was not the best interest for the school/fans/boosters.

we love cheap hires. I told my friends we wouldnt make a splashy hire, they all lost it when I said this. It doesnt mean the hires are all bad, it just means we dont spend money on coaches. This may be outside of the AD's control, given how often it is.

The more I read about it, the more im willing to give the hire a chance. But boy would it be nice for once if mizzou acted like they cared from the start. Hiring an unproven coach that works is luck

No chance.

Choi will need to go first and that isn't happening over the BB program head coach hire.

The University of Missouri is as "woke" as they come.

Yes, you nailed it. The Mizzou job is soooo bad there was only ONE guy among the hundreds of college basketball coaches who would demean himself to accept it.

I would suggest you start an Internet campaign to have the BOC overturn this outrageous travesty.

I haven't posted since the news leaked out at late Friday night about gates being the man. I was hoping to calm down and find some sort of perspective. Over 48 hours later my attempt has failed.

I have 2 questions for DRF

1. How long have you been friends with the Gates family

2. What cool promos do you have planned to get fans in the stands next year.

I doubt there was any kind of real search. Gates was her guy from day one.

I could be wrong, but this is what happens when you hire an A.D for all the wrong reasons.

You end up with a family friend for a BB coach from a community College in Cleveland.

Bring on football

The rise of AAU & NIL marks the demise of the style of basketball exemplified by CM and Gates. So of course our AD is on the wrong side of the devide.

Gates top 8 players are all seniors, that's horrendous to not only fail to reach the tournament, but roster control.

Also his team's cant shoot the 3, so at least this will be a comfortable feeling for us. The last three years his teams averaged 31% from 3.

His defenses ranked in kenpom at: 231, 279, and 250

MIZ!

Im not saying he wont win here, but this is nothing more than a rolling the dice hire.

The Brightside, They only lost @Okie state(34th) by 5, @X(55th) by 4, @BYU(43rd) by 10

I believe I asked two legitimate questions. Apathy with the basketball program, and Mizzou athletics, as whole, are at all time lows. This hire does not move the needle and won't sell tickets. Athletic Department was contacting big boosters trying to get them behind the hire, which, in itself, is telling. I wish the guy luck but the circumstances of the hiring sure look questionable.

10000%. Attendance will not be any better, likely worse next season. If he wins, then sure it'll go up for 23-24, if he loses it'll be the worst we've ever seen.

The job sucks. The roster is absolutely awful, nobody attends games and while we have a talent hotbed in state we can’t get anybody to come here.

So basically, you have to get lucky. Maybe Gates is that, maybe not but Cuonzo still had to go

We do, though. We have always paid our coaches top20 money when they are decent. It is just that first contract that is more budget oriented, outside of CM. I think we signed CM to a top 20 salary on day 1.

He was still top 25 this past year I believe. Not bad for more years under .500 than over.
