Kirby Smart's Contract

Some of us have speculated on Kirby's contract. We all (I think) know he will be getting new one....but how much will it be? Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly left what were perceived to be destination jobs for larger contracts.
Those are some interesting points made in this article by Connor O'Gara for Saturday Down South.
Two particularly interesting paragraphs:
This isn’t just rewarding a 1-off season like Ed Orgeron after 2019. Smart is the only coach in the country riding an active streak of 5 consecutive top-7 finishes. Neither Riley nor Saban can make that claim.
If you had to bet your house on a coach to win the most titles in the 2020s, you’d have a tough time not picking Smart. That’s not to say his new contract would demand he repeat Saban’s 2010s, but nobody is set up better to win than Smart. The recruiting, the facilities, the talent development, the championship-or-bust mindset … Georgia has it all … with Smart.
Saturday Down South
It might not be a great idea to take this to the Rant, as I think Nick Saban is the best Coach in the country still.....and it will just be met with little respect and a lot of eye rolling....but it is an interesting read nonetheless.
ETA
I decided to circumvent people going to the Rant to troll with this by posting it on the Rant. I concentrated it on the part about how the value at Alabama went up after Saban went there...but told them the article was primarily about Smart getting a new contract.

The ability to facilitate NIL deals along with portal management are the new game changers.
What Kirby knows is he is nothing without ability to pay (keep) top notch staff and coaches to achieve this. Also a continuation of the facility arms race.
Who knows what the Foundation/AA can spend but not leaving money for these things cripples his future success.
He is set for life financially either way.

lol not sure I'd go that far

If you HAD to bet your house...
Out of curiosity, who would you pick? I mean Saban will probably be gone soon.
Riley could be a choice, but he hasn't proven he can win any kind of big game. Brain Kelly at LSU could be in the running. Ryan Day? maybe.
But if you HAD to bet your house....who would you pick?
(I would eliminate Saban assuming he retires in a couple of years.) If Saban is in the conversation, I think we pick him.

Yeah, I wouldn't bet the house, but I wouldn't be surprised by it either.

But he said "If you HAD to bet the house."
I am always curious about others opinion.
If you HAD to bet the house, who would it be?
I think it is an interesting topic to discuss. I would also say take Saban out of the equation. We don't know how much longer he will be in the picture.....but if he is in the picture I pick Saban every time.
Next....
I think Riley is a good choice. USC, with NIL could become a serious threat again.
Ohio State would be. Day would be a solid choice.
Kirby would probably be my first choice, though. Especially after Saban is gone.
Curious about y'alls picks, though.

uh..saban. Obviously. He's the greatest coach in the history of the sport at any level and shows no signs of slowing down. 2021 was supposed to be a retooling year for them and they were still 15 minutes away from winnign it all. As long as saban is there they will be in the title hunt every single season. I'm as giddy as anyone alive that we got us one, but saban has 6. If we're taling about betting the clearly logical choice is to go with saban. The only reason you wouldn't is if you think he's going to retire in the next few years.

Obviously if he is around for a good portion of the decade. But (I made this clearer in a post to a different poster) if Saban were to retire after this season (this is a hypothetical, after all) who would you pick?
Kirby would not be a bad pick. If not for 2nd and 26 we would be looking at two titles in the last 5 years. (Broken coverages!

obviously smart.
But I doubt he does retire this season, and I was firstly responding to the snippet in the OP which made no mention of him retiring next year

SEC has too many competitive teams already; add in Oklahoma and Texas and it wouldn't make sense to pick an SEC-coached team (assuming Saban has retired). I'd take Clemson. They're basically the island boys out there all by themselves in the ACC.

Oh, no. If something were to happen and they did not win everything this year, I think it would get him close. NIL, Transfer Portal etc is very aggravating for older people. (YES! ME!
But yes. I think he has 4-5 years left. Maybe more. Joe Paterno was in his 80's when he was forced to leave Penn State. That said, his teams had slipped a good bit and would only get occasional big years, and some of those had more to do with playing in a down BIG 10 than with his coaching.

Not a bad choice. It will be interesting to see if Dabo can weather the transfer portal/NIL storm coming off of an off year, though. 2022 season will give us some indication. But definitely a possibility.
If I HAD to be the house, I would maybe choose Kirby. After him....probably Riley at USC. Bad conference. They (PAC 12 teams) will struggle with USC's (Riley's) offense for a bit. He will bring USC back to prominence with NIL, imo.

Aranda would be first on my "crash list" Amazing what he did at Baylor this year and I'd take em over Riley,Kelley or Day
Just thank God LSU wasn't smart enough to hire em.They'd be extremely dangerous with that guy.
I would also add Luke Fickellto my list.

I concur. I believe that guy can coach football.
I never understood all the fuss made over Riley.
He seldom fielded a competitive team on the national stage.

I would think it's not all about the money for Kirby although he will take it. I'm wondering what perks they University can throw his way like paying for his house. Right now Kirby is the pillar of excellence for an athletic program that is struggling in other major areas(hoops, baseball).

I would guess closer to 10 year $100 Million like the article speculated.

Actually a great choice, too. I had forgotten about him and what he did.

If I were some of these guys, thoguh, I might consider staying ta a smaller school where I could stay for a long haul rather than go to a big place and possibly get fired quicker.
Give me$50 Million over 20 years over $10 million over 3 years with a possibility of failure and struggling to find a job. I am a very "play if safe" kind of guy, though.

Exciting offense in an era in which great offenses seem to win. People forget that LSU and Alabama had decent defenses when they won....and Riley hasn't fielded a decent defense in a long, long time.

I would. Who are Kirby's main competitors in this? Dabo? Riley? Kelly? Day?(He's NFL bound in the next year or two IMO).
I like those odds. As long as the Sith Lord over in Tuscaloosa retires by 2025, I'd take those odds and go to the bank.
