Prove me wrong: The end of game Tennessee hit on Mertz wasn’t unsportsmanlike.

Heupel’s timeout for no reason but to interrupt a UF celebration was unsportsmanlike.
But Mertz was still running around extending the play with 6 seconds left when Tennessee hit him.
The Tennessee lineman hitting him right as he suddenly kneeled was simply a football move in response to Mertz continuing the play and refusing to kneel.

His knee wasn’t down yet,
And he was backpedaling.
Deserved the hit.
The TO was BS though

It wasn’t and the two guys wanting to throw hands wearing helmets need someone to explain how helmets work

Mertz was bleeding the clock, common practice. It was 4th down and taking a knee right after the snap would have given Tenn the ball with time on the clock.
You hit a QB in that situation it’s an unsportsmanlike every time

Wrong. Mertz was a runner when he left the pocket. If he wanted to burn time he should have thrown the ball as high and far as he could out of bounds.

Good point on it being 4th down, but it only further proves the point that Mertz was still actively making a football play, with no intention of giving himself up, and Tennessee had every right to stop him.

Please show us in the rule book where it says the other team has to let the qb ‘bleed” as much time as they want.

Not a flag.
QB lucky he didn't get lit up worse. Knee never even went down

He had went down to take a knee and then they hit him. im guessing it’s a similar rule to the qb sliding and then getting hit. We should have just punted though.

They snapped the ball with 9 seconds left. If they honestly thought Mertz could scramble around a full 9 seconds to end the game, UF should have blocked a lot better.

4 seconds into that clip, knee on the ground and Mertz hit in the helmet.
Defender was lucky he wasn’t hit with targeting as well.

Its a very similar rule. If you are coming in to hit an actively scrambling QB and he makes a sudden slide just as the hit is coming, that is not a penalty.

So should it have been UT ball right there with 5 seconds left since it was 4th down (if not for the hit)?

Coaches call that timeout all of the time.
That QB deserved to be knocked into next week. You want to take a knee? Then take the knee. Don’t try to be cute and run clock- you do that you are a free runner and you get popped.

NO...... they should be allowed the ONLY throw punches, just like they wanted to do. And when one or both missed multiple games with one or both broken hands... their lesson will be learned.

I’ll go one better and say the TO was justified because he wanted one last chance to score, as a one score loss looks better on paper if they are trying to get in the playoff at the end of the season

I appreciate the irony of offensive genius Chumlee having to burn two timeouts in the 3Q because they can’t get the play in, then burning the last one down 13 with two seconds left because his feelings got hurt. If they had any shame they’d be humiliated today.

Targeting was correctly never called. He was not a defenseless player so it has to be an overt crown of the helmet hit, no different than tackling a running back. The lineman came in high, lowered for the hit, and then Mertz kneeled down into him.
