Yes, I think he would trade a few $$ for not having to hire a defensive staff.
I doubt the connection from 2022 has just washed away, and now his kids don't seem to be much involved.

Who is Bama going to end up with after Penn State nabs their coach? :-)

DJ Durkin probably would never work for Kiffin again. They didn't exactly part on.good feelings from their time at Ole Miss together.

You're right about that. He didn't hesitate to do it to Tennessee. He will do it to Old Piss.
Over rated. USC - dream job, Ole Miss - 6 years (that's a good amount of time).

He’s been pretty high on my list, too, but I’m not concerned. All we’ve heard is that there will be an announcement “right after the Iron Bowl,” so I didn’t expect to hear anything yet. If we get to about Wednesday after the IB and it’s still radio silence, I’ll start getting a little nervous.

If it's Sumrall, have him an offer ready to accept and announce Sunday or Monday. If we get to Tuesday and he is trying to drum up a market between us and Ole Miss, move on.
I'd be surprised if he told Florida no to an interview but not Ole Miss.

I’m in the Sumrall camp.
He reminds me of Coach Dye.
I’m about to get flamed.

I agree with your entire post.

WE didn't toss Hugh aside for fun, it wasn't something new. And if there wasn't already a short list, that yes have have evaporated, I'd be totally surprised.
Maybe he's been listed, maybe not, either way I don't see any reason to loose my shite over not being privy to the behind the scene working. Rather I'm more impressed that no one has reliable information as everyone has been prying as hard as they can.
2me: The PTB seem to have their shite together much better than ever before. And the usual handful of chicken little's will always rant without true reason. We're in better shape today than last time with Caddy (and he did good). And if the process wasn't really mid-stream I'd worry that we've signed someone else's loser mid-season.
Plus the sports writers have to write about something in order to eat.

If Sumrall is really the guy, there is no way they haven’t already finalized terms.
Assuming he is the guy, Sumrall will be announced Sunday midday and the agreement has already been in place. Not sure what we will do about Tulane’s position in the playoff. I have no problem letting him continue on if they make it in. He and his team have earned that.

Who do you want?
I wouldn’t mind Sumrall - I could see him working out and he is a lot more likable than our last two guys. Would be easy to pull for and he seems to understand the ever-evolving state that Cfb is currently in, which I think is pretty crucial to success. I wish he was a little more proven but he’s probably worth the gamble.
I could also get behind Key or Brohm or Dilly. I think Dilly with Durkin would have the highest ceiling in theory.
As far as who do I actually want. Probably Kiffin if I had to pick from a pool without Lanning. But I would probably grow weary of this cycle happening again every few years where his name is tied to all the big openings.

OM has been saying for at least a week that Sumrall was waiting to see what happened with Lane before making a commitment. I know a lot of you guys don’t want to hear it, but staff autonomy is a pretty big deal to any coach worth a damn. Fans think it’s great to say “we can keep Durkin” and “maybe we don’t trust him not to bring his staff” in response to the discussion that candidates had agreed to Faulkner as their OC, but the reality is different. Coaches at this level all have egos. When you signal to them they don’t or won’t have final say in the 2 most important positions on the staff, you’re setting yourself up to for disappointment.
Before the LK stuff hit hard last week, he probably was all AU, but it’s quite possible he sees OM as a better opportunity. The program is relatively stable, not in the midst of a 20 year free fall, and it’s possible he has more autonomy with staffing.

Is Cohen really shrinking our pool of candidates by creating requirements on the would be coaching staff or is that just message board speculation? I pray it's the latter because that's insane.

You are being a women right now.

On one hand I agree coaches should hire their own staff. On the other, I do not want Craddock. Dude went 2-10 when he was OC for Arky. Hopefully Cohen made it clear that AU doesn't want some lame D2 staff. I think there can be a middle ground. "We aren't telling you who to hire, but we are saying what we don't want."
Sumrall is a former DC so he should be able to hire a good P4 OC. OC's prefer to work for defensive head coaches because they know they will get the credit which helps their career.

I am not an insider and have no inside information but I have been a message board user for over 25 years and in that time ive discovered a few people who almost always have good information. Those people are all saying Sumerall is a done deal and it will be announced Sunday or Monday after the Iron Bowl. That combined with the fact the search has been shut down for over a week makes me fairly confident that this is true and all the other noise is click bait from Hoke and the OM crew. Sumerall was actively shopping himself to Auburn weeks before Freeze was let go.

YEAH OKAY LOL fans speculation doesn’t mean anything

I don't disagree with that. "What kind of staff are you thinking about bringing in?" type questions could be a valid part of the interview process. That's different than forcing certain coaches on someone though.

This is new info. Please elaborate on why or how a coach was shopping himself to a school weeks before the previous coach was fired.. that’s a pretty big accusation to make
