Tony Barbee also was very successful at a school in a small conference before coming to Auburn. That doesn't necessarily translate to success in power conferences. Hiring White would be taking another chance on an up-and-comer.
We may not be the sexiest power-conference job, but I think we can get a little more established coach than White.

He is currently an assistant coach in the South Korean league. I would hope we could do better.
Some names I haven't seen mentioned here are Keith Dambrot(Akron HC and LBJ's high school coach), Larry Eustachy(currently at CSU. Would be a good choice if his drinking problem is out of the way), Ben Howland(unemployed former UCLA and Pitt HC) and Ron Hunter(GA St).

Agreed. He also has the plus of having been at Southern Miss recently so he knows the recruiting landscape.

I cant bring myself to root for Auburn to lose but on the other hand I dont want Barbee to frick around and save his job by winning a game or 2 in the tourney.

I know Arkansas got beat bad today but if we beat USCe again there's no way we get past Arkansas. And if we did UT waits after that and we know how that would go
