I’m not gonna complain about any schedule or player at this point. We are 7 in the NET and that puts us around a 2 seed. We look as good as any team in the conference and possibly in the country.
Every player has their role. What is special so far about this team is it appears the players have accepted their roles. CMo and Lior ain’t playing 20 minutes. Chris is playing about 12 and Lior 2-4. Both are extremely physical. Chaney has the athleticism but as conference play continues will play somewhere between 12-14 minutes per game. He hustles. Expecting JayWill to play around 25-28 minutes per game. Cardwell I would like to see get more time when Tre is at the point.
I’m just going to enjoy the ride

You are right. Somewhere between 4-7 Q1 games left most likely. @MSU and FL wins won’t resonate nationally like a win or two over UK and TN, but those would be big road wins.

Yeah the UT and UK games are where we can get some national juice for seeding. If we don't win either of those two or maybe @Bama hard to see us above the 3-4 seed line.
Regardless, we've got a dang good team.

Whole thing on 247
Texas A&M head basketball coach Buzz Williams
On what Auburn did to limit them to only 10 second chance points
“They have great presence at the rim. (Johni Broome, Dylan Cardwell, Jaylin Williams, Chaney Johnson). Their size, their physicality, their length. We did do a good job on the offensive glass, not only on the putbacks but also on the penetration to the rim. We did not finish at a high rate. I think 40% of our shots happened at the rim. . . .
On having recent success against Auburn and what might have been different about Neville Arena this time
“I am not from here. … I do not know anybody here. But I think the environment is all that you want college basketball to be. Everybody is hollering at me and mad at the officials. As far as you can see, people are standing up there. They are here as soon as we get here. I do not think they are all drinking water. I think the state liquor laws are probably different here than elsewhere. I like it.
. . .
“Great environment. Great support. Great student section. Those who are not students, you can tell are engaged. Some day when I am not coaching, I want to come to a football game here. Does a football game here have the same sort of live – what is it called? … Maybe I will get a ticket.”
On what made A&M’s pressure defense so effective
“(Auburn guard Aden Holloway) is good. But (Auburn guard Tre Donaldson), you could argue may be the most improved freshman-to-sophomore perimeter player that I have studied thus far in the league. He has really leaned out. I bet he has lost seven-to-eight percent body fat. The strength coach needs a raise.
“I think he is much more comfortable playing with leverage. He has a higher usage rate than (Holloway). I think (Donaldson’s) usage rate is 28% off the bench. That is a really high number. Obviously (Auburn forward Chad Baker-Mazara) is a microwave when he comes in offensively.
“But we were trying to change so that they could not ever get in a groove. Change a little bit of what we were doing in the frontcourt. Change a little bit of what we were doing in ball-screen coverage. They are so explosive offensively that if you keep giving them the same diet – in the games that I have watched, they seem to get better and better. So we were trying to alter their rhythm as best as we could, particularly on the primary ball handler.”

Starting to manifest the idea of Jaylin Williams on an NBA roster.

If he keeps it up he will probably get some looks. Broome will get some looks. Probably not athletic enough against true bigs.
Here’s you one just out of the blue. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dylan landed on an NBA roster at some point. Not drafted just picked up. Very few dudes 6’11 can do what he does defensively. He’d be like a 3rd center type role maybe get minutes once a week to give the 2 deep a break a game or so.

JWill was inconsistent, but overall had a pretty good game.
22 points (team leader)
8 rebounds (team leader)
3 assists
Played a team high 35 mins
100% from the line
80% from the field
50% from behind the arc
Hit the final open 3 that was a dagger in their heart.
That was inconsistent? Bro, you have some high standards.

Hard to believe how bad Chaney was in only 5 minutes. He made them memorable I guess

Overly critical on my part from a pet peeve on inconsistent defensive effort. Broome suffers from the same.
Posted on 1/10/24 at 12:50 pm to WDE24
WDE24 coming in hot with the bad takes. Broome isn’t a bouncy guy but plays hard defense. Especially considering how much we swap 1-5. He’s a methodical player so looks like he isn’t all effort but he’s a legit defender. Extremely long players with bounce will always give him trouble but that doesn’t mean the effort isn’t there.

Idk I kinda see what he means. Broome is definitely a good defender but seems like he and J Will are the only 2 guys on the team who will give up on a play sometimes when they are beat. Like think of CBM chase down last night where he almost was hit with a flagrant. Our team is full of guys who won’t allow the easy bucket there so it’s sometimes disorienting to see Broome just kind of give up. However, who knows, the occasional self-preservation might help us with Broome and J Will

Streaky.
But his flat footed defensive presence helps keep him in games where Cardwell would foul out with unlimited minutes.

Sometimes I’m good with the giving up an easy bucket just to avoid a foul call… the 2nd half last night was ridiculous… any Aggie player who remotely got close to the rim was getting a whistle.
Then jaylin gets undercut when he beat an Aggie player to a loose ball?… out of bounds. Such bullshite.

WDE24 coming in hot with the bad takes
quote:At times and other times he gets easily beat down the court and is extremely slow and uninterested in getting in position. Got benched in the first half of the Arky game for this. When he’s engaged and working hard, he can be an excellent defender. The same is true of J Will. He goes through stretches where his defensive effort is lower than it should be. It happens with every player occasionally, but these two take breaks on defense more often than others.
Broome isn’t a bouncy guy but plays hard defense.
quote:My analysis is based on seeing his lack of effort and has nothing to do with playing a long, bouncy player.
that doesn’t mean the effort isn’t there.
