Justin Ferguson
@JFergusonAU
Auburn basketball just secured its first 4-0 regular season sweep of Alabama and Georgia since 1967.

And the Tigers also now have back-to-back seasons of double-digit SEC wins for the first time since 1976.

I think they had basketball split into divisions like football then which resulted in odd basketball schedules.

It's stats like this that really make you realize what BP has been able to do here...and it's only beginning.

It’s more impressive to also consider this isn’t the mid major level SEC of the early 2010s, this is a legitimately strong league.

He also has 8 teams SEC teams in. That’s as many as any other conference

I know people on this board love to trash our offense for being too 3 happy and not having an interior presence

Here is a counter hot take

We should be striving to shoot more 3s with better shooters at the 4/5. When watching our games, there are an insane amount of quality, open 3FG opportunities for Dunbar/Purifoy/McLemore/Spencer/Okeke/Doughty.

Our issue isn't that we have no driving/post threat, we simply have no reliable shooting for our wide open opportunities

Agreed. Unfortunately, this incoming recruiting class, which I do really like, doesn’t offer much in the way of shooting

No they don’t, but they will be more well rounded.

I don't know what their wide open % is, but those guys listed are shooting 35.6% from 3. It's not that bad. Would rank 116 out of 353 as a team by themselves. We're ranked 43rd as a team with everyone.

I see your point, but in the end we are a one trick pony. When it is working we can be a tough out, but stats are stats for a reason. Having a guy or two who can take people off the bounce and big enough to draw contact would help when the shooting is cold...along the same lines a big inside presence scoring would also help when things go cold.

It has to be extremely high. They have frequently have open or minimally contested shots

They have to be open, teams blanket Harper/Brown with extreme hedging off ball screens + double teams

Problem is that is an eFG% of 53.4 which is below our team eFG% of 53.9. That is low volume though on generally on high quality looks too. It is very clear that teams don't respect our secondary shooters. For example, anytime Harper gets in the lane, he is smothered by help defenders / rim protector

If we could reliably shoot 35-40+% at every position on the floor, I'm convinced we'd absolutely torch every opponent.

I say that because Villanova absolutely torched every opponent with that strategy

We have that w/ Okeke at the PF, and we would have had that at center if Wiley wasn't always hurt or if he hadn't been out a whole year when the season started.
And Okeke needed to just be forced to get the ball and be aggressive to the basket on offense. He was so tentative early in the season, and Pearl even pointed that out. But in the last 6 games, he has mostly been being the PF with moves inside the lane, and power moves to the basket.

I’m not of the opinion we should be out seeking some traditional low post option. I mean if we can get someone like a Maten that would be fine but I think we are getting the right kind of guys to be successful in this system. Hopefully we can just get better versions of the guys we have.

A Jared Harper than can finish at the rim
A 6’4 Bryce Brown
A Samir Doughty that can jump
A Horace Spencer that can knock down open shots

Etc...

I’ve got no issue with the type of guys we have been going after, I just hope with success we can keep getting better and better versions of them.

Austin Wiley, even if healthy and every bit the prospect he was supposed to be, was always an odd fit.
