Justin Ferguson
@JFergusonAU
Oh, wow. Auburn is back up to No. 14 (Ken Pom.) So it could finish the weekend without moving in that, even with a 27-point loss.

Only dropped from 20 to 23 on NET.

These rankings love the shite out of us and have all season. Not complaining.

Despite not having any quadrant 1 wins two weeks ago, and not picking up any since then on the court, we have been awarded two. A&M is now within top 75 so there is one. Not sure which other game gave us a quadrant 1 win though.

Xavier also beat Villanova by 12 today and we beat Xavier earlier in the season.

Al.com has an article if y’all want to see it but apparently Bruce Pearl apologized to the Kentucky fans at Rupp Arena fans for not getting a better showing and it’s not sitting well with me.

I guess Auburn fans that have rode the highs and lows with him are just chopped liver.

Meh, seems like a weird thing to get upset about. It seems like he was asked about Rupp.

Nah. He spent the whole press conference gushing about Rupp. It wasn’t the first time he’s coached there. We can’t do the things that we want to do if he’s big eyed every time he walks in there. He seriously did a great job recruiting for Kentucky. lol

It was an embarrassing loss to say the least

Honestly it was like going to an Alabama football game. The crowd expects to win so it’s pretty dull for the most part.

I would appreciate an apology from Bruce for being one of the 27 Auburn fans in attendance

Now you are getting to what I have been saying the past few weeks that has hurt everyones feelings. The team has gotten worse all season. If you think the team out there now could bear Xavier or keep Duke from beating them by 30, you are just blind

The team has not progressed. They have lost ground all season. We have plenty of talent, they just look like a mess out on the court.

You are right and there is a clear point when things started to go south. Pains me to say it because Ive been pulling hard for him but it happened the same time Purifoy came back against UAB. We haven't been the same team since.

Lanier may be right but losing by 2, 3,5,5, 8, and 15 on the road or against Kentucky in the SEC didn’t prove we were sliding. The game against Kentucky at Rupp is the first time we should have alarms blaring. Was the first time we quit.

Some of Pearl’s better teams at UT took huge embarrassing L’s at Rupp.. it’s just a place that can throw you a knockout blow early. I was actually impressed early how we responded to PJ Washington making all those dang threes but then we didn’t respond the same in the second half.

PJ blew up the whole dang game plan.

I wouldn’t read too much into that Rupp loss being some kind of turning point for the worst.. at least until after this coming Wednesday.

We were ranked 10th or something like that at the beginning of the year. Beat Xavier and played Duke very tough in a neutral court.

Yes we have lost by small numbers at times but look at who we lost to. Not just Kentucky.

Ole miss twice
Miss St
South Carolina
etc

Im not sure when we started this season and left Hawaii that we thought we would be losing some of these games. Nobody is saying we are a terrible team, just that this team has not progressed at all and has not played up to expectations.

Some of the games we lost, we looked terrible. Just a little organization and we would have won most of those games. We have the talent, just not playing up to the level of the talent

Quit? I always don't understand that response. What did you see that showed they quit? I can understand that KY was on fire, and at the start of the second half, for the first 5 mins we couldnt make a basket, which allowed KY to pile it on. BB, MD, AM, and Okeke all missed shots.
And I am sure they lost of energy and confidence. They expect to make shots, and it is demoralizing to them to see that they couldn't mount a comeback. But I didn't see them quit. Brown, Okeke and others were all working to make something happen.

We don't get blown out much at all, but is it not surprising it can happen in Rupp? As little as we have won there, does that mean anytime we get blown out, we must have quit? I don't think that at all...

Nah dude we quit. They don’t beat us by that much if we didn’t quit.

Justin Ferguson saw what I saw:

Justin Ferguson
@JFergusonAU
FINAL: (4) Kentucky 80, Auburn 53

Well, that was a season-worst performance in a worst-possible matchup for Auburn. And for the first time in a while, this team looked like its will to fight back died some in the second half.

Big week coming up at Georgia and home vs. MSU.

I agree w/ Ferguson. Maybe it's just the wording. But the 'will to fight back died some in the second half', doesn't mean they quit (which to me is just complete failure).

When they missed all those shots in the first 5 mins of second half, and KY kept hitting even contested shots (even PJ), that their will and energy sunk, bc they realized then, that they couldn't mount a comeback.

Wow at all the high expectations now that we are a so-called basketball school. Before Pearl we were shite. I am glad where we are today and it will only get better.

We definitely lost the will to fight back. When you’re down 30 in one of the toughest places to play it happens. I agree there is a major distinction between that and “quitting”.

Whether our will to fight died down some in the second half or we quit is just being nit picky. Fact of the matter is we got put in our place and it’s not a good look losing like that when we have the talent to keep it closer.

As for our season, it’s not surprising how it’s played out. Wiley is clearly still hurt. He should be held out for the rest of tbe season and come back for the tournaments imo. Secondly, this is not the same team as last year. Purifoy is still just now coming around. He’s come back around enough though that I think he should want to return. The subtractions and additions to the team didn’t render this team a better team. Lastly, the consequences of the Person saga stunted the development of our roster. Thus, we play like a talented do or die team that’s trying to overcome deficiencies, and it’s led to both, the 18 wins, and to the 9 losses. It may seem stupid to want to go to the tournament knowing our team isn’t particularly well built for the tournament, but we still have things to play for. We can have consecutive 20 win seasons, and we can still play well when the shots are fallen. We have an anything can happen kind of team. Maybe we can make a pleasant run in the SEC tournament similar to tbe Georgia run that occurred while the stadium was leaking. Auburn needs buzz and getting some would help Bruce recruit since he is the greatest hype man on this side of the earth.

FWIW, JMO, and don’t shoot the messenger
