I will not lie. It has always been our dream. For the last 10 years, not a single day went by that I didn’t think about it. My wife took a few pictures of our trips to the Caribbean and tacked them on the wall of my shop back in Georgia and on our refrigerator. It kept me focused.

It’s almost been 2 years and the newness hasn’t worn off a bit.

I have been trying

Somehow, my wife and her brother talked me into going to Amelia Island this August for a week. Seems kinda counter productive considering where we live but whatever. I need to check out the boating/fishing scene there and see if its worth while to take my boat.

Just got back from Excellence Oyster Bay, Jamaica. 3.5/5 in my book. We're hitting St George Island for the 4th. Started renting houses there in 2000 and we still go back.

The Mrs and I rent cabins up there in the winter, never really been when it's warm. Blue Ridge is a pretty cool little town. No recs for a fam, though. Sorry.

We've done Amelia Island a few times. I grew up on the gulf coast, so the east coast beach and surf were a novelty to me. I enjoyed to long, flat beach, with hard sand. Easy to play sports with the kids on, finding shark teeth is cool too. Rented surf boards, which is a waste of $ on the gulf. Decent little downtown and good food, but I haven't been in 3-4 years. Can't speak on the boat issue.

Is Amelia island right for me?

I think he was answering that for me. I am headed there for a week in August. Is an old persons part of Florida on the Atlantic side. shite side in my opinion.

My wife and her brother went there every year for vacation growing up. Now they want to go back to "remember". It's hard for me to leave the beautiful beaches and clear water to go there but I will do my part....

We go up to Cleveland, GA, which is about 5 miles from Helen. Helen is cheesy as hell but there is family stuff to do there and the town is that Bavarian style so there's that, I guess. Lots of candy and fudge shops but I guess it depends on how much entertainment you're looking for. we go mostly to Cleveland for a couple of hole in the wall restaurants and spend the rest of the time hiking and hot-tubbing but we're not having to do the family entertainment. The hike to Duke's Creeks falls is 1 mile in and 1 mile back and the falls are beautiful. The hike to to Raven Cliff Falls is about 2.5 in and 2.5 out - you have to cross big slippery log to start the trail but it's also beautiful. Last time, we did Martin's Mine trail in Smithgall Woods State Park and it's a couple of miles of paved trail before you go off towards the falls. Oh and then there's Unicoi and Vogel State Parks - just a ton of great hiking up in that area.

I'm gathering some vibes that this town is more like a March or October visit. What is so cheesy about Helen and what kind of stuff can be done in Helen?

maybe I'm being a bit harsh and some others can weigh in. they do a big Oktoberfest thing but I would avoid that time, especially with family because it's bonkers crowded. it's cheesy to me because the entire town is built up to look like this German village, including the 7 Eleven and the fast-food places. restaurants are probably 3 out of 5 stars. You could easily kill a day or half-day walking around and looking at the gift shops and novelty places but it's basically like a 5 or 6 block strip of shops and restaurants.

on the flip side, you can do all kinds of tubing, kayaking, fly fishing, hiking, apple picking and all of that stuff so there's a lot of fun to be had.

Damn I guess that’s where I’m taking my family then. Sounds like Gatlinburg before it got popular.

Did a long vacation in January to Scotland but nothing is better than Carova Beach in September after the tourist leave. So Carova in September and then start planning for an Okinawa trip with a New Zealand add on for early next year/ grandkids spring break.

It's cheezy but the outdoor life around that area is beautiful. I wouldn't stay in Helen proper but then again I am a recluse.

Headed to Dauphin Island in August for a week. We rent a house on the gulf every year there. Fishing, drinking, eating....rinse and repeat. Low key chill destination.

Dauphin Island is great - a bit like St. George Island’s little immature brother. I wish there were more permanent restaurants and bars (not fast food or chains) but it seems like the storms continually cut that island up.

We did a week trip there about eight years ago and had a great time. Not a lot of choices to eat dinner out but the beaches were wide open and the weather was great.

Blue Ridge is a cool little town. A very blue community surrounded by a sea of red. I like it better than Helen. Helen is a mini Gatlinburg to me.

In Blue Ridge you can visit Mercier Orchards. Delicious apples of all kinds, and if you are there in the fall you can pick your own. Blue Ridge is also home to the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Takes you from the depot in downtown to McCaysville, GA and the sister town across the state line, Copperhill, TN. It's a pretty ride through the mountains following the Toccoa River.

If you get bored of Blue Ridge you can do day trips to Amicalola Falls, Blairsville/Vogel State Park, or really even go as far as Helen/Cleveland.

Two nice things about the Helen area - tubing the Chattahoochee when it is a fairly clear, shallow mountain stream/river and the hike to Ana Ruby Falls.

If your girls are young enough, they might enjoy the Babyland General Hospital (home of the Cabbage Patch dolls) in Cleveland.
