"yea, Id like to be catcher but I cant throw the ball back to the pitcher". WTF
seems like thats why Dale Murphy ended up switching to OF from C, he developed an inability to throw the ball back to the pitcher

Hell, Chuck Knoblach went through a stretch with the Yankees where he couldn't throw it from second to first.

I played summer ball against Mackey Sasser. One of the best hitters I ever saw. He played SS growing up. He made it to the Bigs as a catcher. He got to where he couldn't throw it back to the pitcher. They moved him around but he wasn't good enough in the field to stick.

quote:

With the Mets he was used as a backup for catcher Gary Carter for two seasons before playing 100 games in the 1990 season. That year he had 83 hits and a .307 batting average. After a serious collision with Jim Presley of the Atlanta Braves at home plate, Sasser began to hesitate and repeat his motion when returning the ball to the pitcher, a normally routine activity (he did not have this problem when throwing to second base on an attempted stolen base).

quote:

After his playing career, Sasser became a baseball coach at Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama as well as athletic director of the college in 2011. He retired at the conclusion of the 2022 season after 25 years as the head baseball coach for the Governors.

After experiencing difficulty throwing batting practice to his players, he was finally able to overcome the problem with help from psychotherapist David Grand.[2]

It's crazy but the mind will frick you up.

ETA I am 60something and still blame a good changeup on my mind fricking me up.

Psychogical or couldnt handle the wear and tear? I remember a kid who was our catcher whose arm went completely noodle in HS.

First the HC was complaining get it to the pitcher in the middle of the game then flips his tune and acted like his catcher was about to lose his arm. It was a strange thing to see.

Happened in my school. Stupid coach had us out playing in sleet trying to make us go full force. Freezing cold a few of us tore up our shoulders in throwing. Never the same after that.

To much wear and tear on a UCL sounds like. Or damaged rotator.

No one was worse than Steve Sax and he recovered from the yips.

The Yips:
The yips are a neurological disorder that causes involuntary muscle spasms, making it difficult for players to perform routine throwing movements.

Murphy's problem was he didn't have the finesse to throw to second base. His arm was too strong and he didn't know how to control it so he was constantly overthrowing the bag.

The comment was that when he was behind the plate no one was going to steal center field.
