Should Auburn do more to recognize the achievements of David Marsh?

From a pure number of championships perspective Marsh dwarfs all other SEC coaches, in any sport. Should the school be doing more to recognize him?

Perhaps they named something after him already and I missed it.

Yeah, we should pay him serious money and hire him back.

They weren't all SEC, but John McDonnell at Arkansas has a ton more championships.

But I don't disagree with you. He's the best coach we've ever had at Auburn.

Other than giving me the "Fire Jay" answer, can anyone sum up what has happened to our swimming and diving programs?

I believe it has something to do with HOPE in GA, but I could be completely wrong. I know GA has a lot of talent in S&D and now UGA has become a powerhouse, in part because we can't compete with HOPE.
I know for a fact that is the case in T&F where UGA will take kids and all they have to give them are books & supplies.

Wouldn't be surprised. Would allow a lot of kids to be on "scholarship" without counting towards totals

Much of our S & D success was due to the international recruiting where Marsh excelled.

It really had everything to do with Marsh leaving. You can make a pretty compelling argument that he's the best swim coach IN THE WORLD...so yeah. He left, and Richard Quick (another great coach) filled his place, but for only one year, bringing out last title (2009). Brett Hawke acted as the interim coach as Quick was getting treatment, so he was promoted to HC once Quick was unable to fulfill the role.

Hawke just hasn't been able to keep the program at the caliber Marsh was able to maintain. This is mainly due to recruiting, but also the program has become unbalanced where we have several great sprinters, but are weak in distance swimming. Currently, we cant even win relays which deliver the most points in meets.

I've heard that Marsh wasn't the biggest fan of Jacobs, so seeing Jacobs promoted to AD only reinforced his decision to move on. Marsh still loves AU and visits a few times a year. If Jacobs retires, it's entirely possible that he might look to return.

Yeah he's not coming back to deal with our AD
Plus our facilities have to be considered getting old, although they were built when I was there and considered one of the best in the country at the time. Not sure how they compare now?
I have a friend who transferred to AU specifically to swim for Marsh back in the early 90s.

Yes, our facilities are now beginning to be considered outdated (22 years old). The AD has pledged some money to make improvements, but it's really not enough to be noticeable. Part of the reason is the reduced success of the program.

I had a class with Hawke while at Auburn (He had to get some type of degree to be the coach), and he seemed like an idiot.

I remember reading back when it happened, amidst the fire JJ blather, that one of the primary reasons Marsh left was due to modifications the NCAA had made with regard to international recruiting.

Marsh could likely have just about any college job in the country if he wanted it. Yet he doesn't have (or seemingly want) a college job.

Something to think about.

Oh, fire JJ.
