gotta pay for that conference expansion somehow
enjoy it while you can, paid subscription-only streaming is next
how much would you be willing to pay to see AU on TV? we're gonna find out in the next couple of years

I'd rather have it that way, even if it only restricted commercials to areas that don't pause the game. There are lots of places to put brief promos without stopping the flow of the game.
The NCAA has effectively removed "working the clock" as part of the game in many situations all in the name of greed.

Please tell me you know that there is a replay official in the booth that handles replays not the official on the field

Tonight’s LSU FSU game broadcast has been on for 38 min and there has been just under 8 min of actual game.
What a joke.
Now 1 hour in and we’ve had 1qtr of football.
Pete, what’d you do last night?
Watched commercials.
We’re 2hr 13 min into the broadcast and the 3rd Qtr hasn’t even started.

I stand corrected. Always looks like it is the guy on the field with the little shielded viewer and remote that makes the determination, but I guess he's just doing the announcement. That still leaves the question as to why it takes so damn long so many times when the network TV crew has pegged it in short order? Crappy control software? Cludgy access to video?

Yeah, watching that too. Ball changes hands and we get a string of 4 to 8 commercials before the game resumes. Makes it hard to watch even if the game has bearing on Auburn's future opponent.

Hey, they got the game in under 4 hours. Yay college football!

Chip Kelly to ESPN at halftime: "These new rules are crazy. We had four drives in the first half. Hope you guys are selling a lot of commercials."

He is right. The fans were sold out.

Stopping the clock after a 1st down has never been the issue. Those are 1 min to move the chain. It’s the 3 min TV TO’s after every Punt, TD/ FG then 2 mins later on a Kick Off. Then you’ll get an injury or penalty which the networks use to their advantage.
They should look to opportunities to combine opportunities.

The problem I have is ESPN is a subscription channel and still has so many ads. The whole idea of subscription TV was to remove ads. Like HBO and Showtime do. Or these days like Netflix does.
Remember ESPN is no longer part of "regular cable". They have moved it to a "premium" tier and therefore ads should be greatly reduced, but they're not. It's a ripoff.

Yeah, it's getting almost unwatchable for any game of limited interest. The games are already starting to look like a sponsored car in NASCAR. Seems there should be strict rules on when and where commercials can run especially when they interrupt the flow of the game.

I don't know what kind of system they are using for replays, but I do know that it takes a ridiculously long time way too often.
I was thinking what might be the ideal system to speed that crap up having worked in video and production for decades.
A good system would be one that records all of the video streams at the same time. Lots of systems can do that now and they aren't expensive. Their default playback to a large multi image touch screen would always be in sync for all angles with the ability to enlarge any screens desired with a simple touch or put two in sync side by side to scrub through at any desired speed.
Then if it still takes that damn long to make a decision, the problem is personnel not hardware and software.

They need to learn from the XFL. Their system is quick.

How do they do it? Or is it that they are just quick?

Both. They have a guy in the booth that is looking at every play. He is in communication with the head ref the entire game. They talk the entire game. It is shown on TV so you can hear it. Typically their replay is almost decided before they are set up for the next play. At most I have seen it only take a few seconds. They use all of the replays and tend to be synced. They are that quick. Watch one of their games. They know how to keep the game moving shortening the time the game is played but not shortening the game overall like the new rules are doing in the NCAA.

Very well done. I wish they had gone more into the actual controlling software and video set up, but yeah, it proves that it can be done. Makes me wonder why it hasn't been done.
Yeah, having all views recorded and in sync for playback makes getting the right views needed a much easier task.
