Friend was Tennessee’s OL coach in 2020. What am I missing here?

Will Friend left UT on 12/22/2020. He was listed as the primary recruiter for Amarius Mims.

I think Harsin needs to rethink this hire

I don’t like Friend for other reasons but schools have a lot of ways to offer/pay kids. I doubt they’re using the coaching staff to do it

If this is what the fuss is about Story of Violations then is it really that big of deal? Or am I missing something that is bigger? Honest question. If this is about a meal and a paintball match...then I don't see a big deal.

I'm not saying he was personally dropping off the keys to a Charger, but Friend was brought in to be a recruiter. And if the rumors are true, the recruit that's at the center of all this was recruited by Friend. NCAA probably isn't going to turn a blind eye to that. I rather cut our losses now but maybe I'm just paranoid

These are slap on the wrist type penalties from the NCAA.

But I think the main thing they were looking for was just a reason to not pay Pruitt.

Was he? I thought he left after 19. My bad.

From my understanding, it was paintball and a meal off campus...no need to drop a coach over that and we don't know if he was involved in either instance.

Bobo worked with friend at UGA and Colorado State. He has some nice recruiting wins but the bag is mixed at best. He’s here because of Bobo

I don't think these are mutually exclusive. I think Bobo recommended Friend because he's a good recruiter in the SEC.

Anyway, I guess we'll see how it all plays out. Our compliance staff is second to none. So they'll pull the plug if needed

I’m just pointing out the difference in what we say on message boards versus the more likely reality I’m sure him signing Morris and Wright at UT was a line item on the resume.

Brian Niedermeyer was the Tenn asst coach that's tactics are in question according to a article I read on Saturdays Down South. He was in charge of recruiting Mims where the violations reportedly took place.

Him and Felton, who was Big Kat's HS coach, have been fired for Cause.

Felton was the primary reason why BK transferred

Welp, at least he has Steele.

My bad I guess. Friend seems to be a much better recruiter than coach. His line play at UT was subpar to awful with a good amount of talent. With Bedell on staff only responsible for TEs, it makes sense that he'd help out with the OL. But yeah, alot of reading between the lines. Guess we'll see

Yeah. I just don’t like most of what I see with Friend. Their 2020 OL should have been awesome with 4 5*s and basically everyone regressed and that line wasn’t very good as a unit. Hoping Bobo thinks it was just a bad fit since he’s worked with him quite a bit in the past. Obviously wanted him at both USCe and Auburn

His recruiting was weird as well. Anyway, I’m rooting for it to work out for us. Just not sure what we have in that guy

If it was just the OL, maybe. But UT did not develop the QB, WR, or RB position.
