Harsin was the worst head coach I've ever written about. The coaches that weren't his boys didn't like him. He didn't have a QB on the roster. Ran off Bo Nix. Couldn't recruit -- and didn't appear to try very hard. Wasn't a people person. Etc.

I mean, that was his reputation when we hired him

He did not disappoint. And it only cost us 35 million to bring him in.

Make no mistake, Auburn set themselves back.

I'm still pissed that we paid Gus 20 Million to leave and had nothing lined up to replace him. Mind boggling.

This bout of stupidity starts with the exceptionally poor decision to hire Leath. ISU was going to fire him for wrecking their airplane along with some other stuff and we saved his bacon by hiring him. Leath begat Greene, Greene begat Hasbeen. Fortunately, all that mess has been cleaned up and President Roberts, AD Cohen, and HC Freeze are knocking it out of the park now.
this is the part where i remind you that Roberts, Cohen and Freezus were hired by essentially the exact same people who hired Leath, Greene and Harsin, after first signing off on Gustav’s extension and subsequent buyout

same as it ever was

Kief had a good take on the Florida-On3 when asked if Potato Head = Napier:
quote:

Keith Niebuhr said: No, because this head coach actually works hard and gives a crap. And he does have some talent coming into Year 3.

Harsin was the worst head coach I've ever written about. The coaches that weren't his boys didn't like him. He didn't have a QB on the roster. Ran off Bo Nix. Couldn't recruit -- and didn't appear to try very hard. Wasn't a people person. Etc.

So many red flags with that guy.

It may not sound like much, but I think Billy Napier cares.

and then when asked about Gus

quote:

Gus was on Year 8.

After 2017, he got hammered on the trail.

What happens is, the negative noise actually does have an impact. Once you are perceived to be on the hotseat, it's a killer on the recruiting trail. So whereas he once beat Georgia for guys, he now was competing with Va. Tech. So your recruiting suffers. And then your roster gets worse. It becomes a cycle that is hard to break.

Now, you have the transfer portal to POSSIBLY help you.

Maybe over simplifications but they both seem pretty spot on (2me) for their brevity.

(BTW: I really like Kieth.)

except for the fact that during 2018-19 cycles he was considered unfireable because of his ridiculous buyout

in fact i doubt there was any serious hotseat talk about him until he got his arse handed to him (again) by UGa in 2020

Division III sounds like a good place for him
If I recall, he left Boise because he thought they weren’t putting enough resources into the program. He’s got the small town petty tyrant approach which is OK in high school and lower levels of football, but he wanted to take that to the highest levels where it no longer works.

Top tier CFB head coach is a CEO job. You need everyone to at a minimum respect you and ideally like you. You need to bring people together with buy-in towards common goals.

Yep. Only two other pieces on Malzahn. All-in-all there should be no hard feelings about the guy it was just time to both move on.

(1) Some reason he could not recruit OLine
(2) He didn’t adapt his schemes to rule changes and personnel whereas Saban has repeatedly adjusted
(3) He was a guy pulling his hamstring on a kickoff and/or a ticky tack PI call away from a national title
