Compared to what, exactly?

Both the City and the University have lost their identity, their culture, and thus their charm.
Change is inevitable, unfortunately. There is just too much money to be made in redevelopment. Kids nowadays want the good digs, swankier apartments, condos, funkier places to hang out, eat and party. So the development that is happening is just filling that demand. One by one the apartments that I lived in have gotten rebuilt. The first one I moved into on West Glenn Ave - Brown II - somehow has withstood the test of time and is now known as the Annex.

We had no money when I was in school.

I ate mostly canned tuna and peanut butter.

Maybe a Momma Gs, Golden Corral run or a Hartz chicken, or Krystal, Wendy’s, whatever, but fancy food was not a thing I was aware of in the 1980s Auburn I knew.

Most of us grad students had precious little time during the week between classes, doing TA work or Research and barely eating. But Fri nights we would beg someone to drop us off over at CiCis over on Opelika Road and just destroy that place.

Nah, I'm ok with using my money for things more important or meaningful to me than sports.

My parents were not wealthy either. I grew up in a decent size town in the suburbs of Atlanta. It is a shite town now but when I grew up there, it was just families.

Showneys or Golden Corral (before it was a buffett) were probably the best two places to eat in that town. LOL. There were no real chain places. We had to drive 40 mins to get to one of those in a different town.

I honestly cant remember going out to eat more than once a month at best throughout my childhood. I remember my mom bringing home Churchs chicken but other than that, we never ate out. Money and availability Plus, my parents were not stupid with what little money they had
