It just makes sense to grab a guy like Petrino
Just from a financial standpoint, he's really the only option. There's no way we can pay to fire Chizik/staff, hire new coach/staff, and pay out his buyout (assuming we're going after a big name coach). We could go after Malzahn and make it happen.

We're either going to be stuck with Chiz for another year or two, get Petrino, or get another risky up and comer. Those are really the only options, unless someone ponies up some serious cash.

Gary Patterson doesn't have a buyout

That's my point. People on here are having a hard time seperating their emotions from reality.

If we keep chizik for two more years ill seriously have to just become a fan of another school
That's entirely too long of a wait for me

Yes, we could go ahead fire Chiz and hire Petrino right now. Name BVG as the interim head coach for the rest of the season. Petrino could get right on top of recruiting the rest of the season and maybe get to know BVG to strike a possible deal for him to stay around (if Petrino thinks they would work well together).
Petrino could also get to know the players and work with the QB's on the side.
Am I crazy to think this is even possible?

Well I honestly don't know what is going to happen. My guess is Chiz wont be gone until after season at least, if the BOT and Admin want him gone. They would have to get together a plan ,starting now, to take swift action if they plan to fire him and have another coach on board quickly. Otherwise we will be stuck with him another year.

I am good with two of those options, up and comer (Malzahn, etc.) or Petrino.

Agree. I'm not in favor of keeping Chizik. I didn't like him when he was here as a DC, or when JJ hired him as HC. I am just pointing out the facts, and how JJ has put us in a bind. It'll be hard to get rid of Chiz, and if we do, JJ should have no say so in the next hire.

Petrino hired VanGorder as his LBs coach in ATL, IIRC... petrino left mid-season, then smith offered VG the DC gig (he had accepted the DC job from spurrier at SC).
They know each other... not sure if that's a good thing though.

This is just a crap situation. JJ seriously deserves to live in a van down by the river for the rest of his life for doing this to us. I am an Auburn fan for life, but the way our administration is ran screws our great fan base over and we deserve better. If Chizik is back next year I will become like a Big 10 fan and care only about academics because it is clear our school is not committed to winning in sports.

Petrino shite on him when he tucked tail, and slithered out of town. I wouldn't call that a good thing at all.

Forget the fact that the big three sports at Auburn all suck donkey balls......... Jay Jacobs should be fired for signing these bullshite buyout contracts on unproven commodities. I think I got a bridge he might be interested in buying now that I think about it!

quote:No disrespect but I do not see buyouts for the assistants in the link you posted. Also Chizik's buyout has been dropping 200k a month since December according to this article. Based on that Chiz's buyout is a bit over $7.7 mil and to be paid out monthly for the next 3 years minus any salaries he makes from any other jobs, appearances, and endorsements.
LINK /
So about 11.5 million LESS any income they get from their other jobs.....
MAXIMUM BUYOUT
Chizik 7.5 million (Dec. 1)
(Dec. 1 to June 14 = 19 months (a little more than 1.5 years)
Loefler $500,000 until June 2014 (791,000)
VanGorder $850,000 until June 2014 (1.345 Million)
Trooper $420,000 until June 2014 ($665,000)
Martinez $255,000 until June 2014 ($403,750)
(7 Months of Payment)
Grimes $400,000 until June 2013 ($233,000)
Luper $320,00 until June 2013 (186,000)
Thigpen $320,000 until June 2013 ($186,000)
Pelton $300,000 until June 2013 ($175,000)
Boulware $255,000 until June 2013 ($150,000)
ETA: Added Boulware and Martinez
(ETA: look for the bottom 4 except Boulware to be GONE for sure)

As is standard, Chizik’s buyout decreases over time, but it decreases monthly. Here are the annual round figures for the buyout: Dec. 1, 2011: $10 million. Dec. 1, 2012: $7.5 million. Dec. 1, 2013: $5 million. Dec. 1, 2014: $3.5 million. Those are just snapshots because the buyout decreases monthly on a prorated basis. According to the contract, this year and next year it drops by $208,334 a month. Another standard of coaching contracts also applies here. Auburn would not owe Chizik a lump-sum payment it it fired him. The buyout would be paid “in equal monthly installments over the remaining duration of the agreement,” which ends Dec. 31, 2015. Hypothetical: If Auburn fires Chizik on Dec. 1 of this year, the total buyout amount would be $7.5 million. That would mean a monthly payment to him of about $202,702.70 for 37 months through the end of his contract. But that’s only if Chizik would be unable to find another job during that time. The contract requires him “to use reasonable efforts to obtain other employment and/or income from third parties.” This is standard coaching-contract language, too. The contract says: “In the event coach obtains other employment after his termination or receives income from any other source (such as for work as an announcer or analyst, consultant, independent contractor, speaking engagement fees, income from writing a book or appearance fees) the amount earned or received by coach will be subtracted from the amount Auburn owes coach.”

The assistants signed a two year contract, meaning we pay them for two years regardless where they work.
Posted on 10/24/12 at 11:16 am to ellitor
They are under contract... if they are let go, we owe them the remainder of their deals... we're not firing them 'with cause' like the petrino situation.
pretty sure they'd be paid the remainder of their deals.
