This is a trend in college football. Your fear on 3rd and long (or anything significant) is giving up the deep ball so you have a safety or two over the top which means you don't have enough people along the first down marker. That means someone is probably going to find a hole in the zone close to the first. The only way to combat that is to man up across the board which is an awful idea when they're running four and five-wide sets.

I'm sure joey will come in with some random stat and make me look like an idiot but I'm going to stick with my factless statement of it being a trend.

I can barely even get mad at the players. I would say on 75% of opponents snaps I can look at our alignment and easily identify a play that will guarantee a minimum of 6-7 yards for the offense.

Guess what? The coaches makes tons of money and QBs who study film all week spot it too. We don't even give ourselves a chance on a lot of plays.

The issue I have with that trend is that it statistically doesn't make sense. The odds of breaking a big play on 3rd down should be much worse than the odds of them making a 1st down so why are we worried about the big play in that scenario?

No kidding. I get it if we are in bump and run or playing tight on the receivers but how can we line up so far off and still be playing catch up on the deep balls?

I watched some of the Bama game last Saturday and saw their LBs dropped back into pass coverage and i promise you it looked like something you'd see on an instructional video. They knew where their spot was with their eyes in the backfield the whole time.. Really was a thing of beauty.

3rd down issues are rooted in the lack of pass rush.

We don't have one... Our middle push is absolutely trash and with Lawson being injured we don't have an outside rush... It's a lack of talent on our Dline, those guys just aren't that good.

Another complaint is that Gus needs to quit getting conservative too early. The last drive (not taking the knee), he didn't really try to get a first down with that much time left. It could have easily cost us the game.

I blame the back shoulder fade. Mainly because we can't do it apparently and everyone else can. Man to man coverage is basically worthless if the QB is worth a crap and you don't have a really good corner. If they're beat hit them in stride. If they're covered throw it behind them. It's almost automatic now if your best guy is manned up on an island, take a shot at him.

Also our lack of a pass rush (as stated previously) is boning us hard on 3rd downs.

Here are my complaints: I hate the third down defense, the secondary has too many holes, and do not forget that the offense continues this 3rd quarter lull.

I think it's kind of funny that people are just now complaining about this. For the last 2 or 3 years, if it is 3rd and 12+ we give it up.

-3rd and less than 5, I feel okay.
-3rd and 20+? Ridiculous pass play for the first down. EVERY. TIME.

Okay. Everybody up. It's 4 in the am. Let's talk about the third down defense before we go to work...

Stupid Thursday night road games.

I have a solution to the third down defense woes. It's simple and bare with me I didn't play or coach football.

1. Whatever you've been doing, do something else.

I guess third and 22 is just a tough situation for us.

A barrel full of third and 8+. If we stop them on 2 of those, we win comfortably.

I think it is a football IQ issue for some of our players. Lack of contain, bad pursuit angles, not locating the ball, etc. The X's and O's are fine. Recruit, recruit, recruit.
